Fuji rumors claims .1 second af lock time w/ new zoom

Looks like the biggest improvement is going to be the new lenses. As others have mentioned as possibility in other forums and threads. The Fuji rumor site mentioned the new zoom is going to have a new af motor which can provide this increase in performance... Assuming with the new firmware upgrade as well...

That new firmware upgrade is going to bring a speed improvement in low light, but I am hoping for a general improvement in the same way Fuji did with the x100. If they can get close to the x100 af speed today give that these xp1 lenses most likely have more mass to overcome, then I would be happy.. But .1 sec is a new game. Yep I also hope all the new lenses use this new af motor...

Oh well just rumors until they announce their hand at photokina

Who depend on AF speed? Sports shooters? Are they widely using this kind of cameras and focal lengths?

Nevermind, I'm just arguing. For me speed of AF isn't priority but this for sure doesn't mean others don't need faster AF. Cats are damn fast, they don't wait too long!

A lot depends on what u take pictures of. There have been times when I am shooting and missed the moment due to the af lock time and yes if I had been using manual focus and setup zone would not have missed it, but it something I do not always remember to do

amen brother! folks are STILL complaining about x100 AF speed, though on over 2000 shots i can count on the fingers of one hand how many ive missed due to 'slow' AF. moreover, i just read a complaint yesterday about the x's lousy MANUAL focusing ability! it just drones on and on, almost mindlessly...

believe me, .1 still won't be fast enough to nail them cats! ):

I only have the 60 native for portraits and macro. I was going to buy the other primes, but I think I will wait a bit now. Glad I didn't have gas too bad.

I guess a lot will be happy if it can just improve enough to nail the occasional sail-cat (or dog). If you use it a lot, it will fail to lock focus at inopportune times, just the facts of this camera.

i'm sorry to disagree, but i use the camera often and overwhelmingly for 'motion' shots, and lack of focus is not a fact for me. quite the opposite. in fact, my old minolta film dslr was so much worse in this regard there is no comparison. in close to two years i can count on the fingers of one hand when the x100 disappointed me. i recently took it as my only digicam on a long holiday in paris and it didnt miss focus a single time, day , night, indoor or out.

in fairness, i did not take a single picture of a cat...

Well there is always disagreement, so that is no surprise. I have never used an X100; my comments are related to the XP1, I should have been clear.

Maybe the X100 AF is a lot better than the XP1. But anyone with experience with a modern DSLR or m4/3s camera and the XP1 knows that its AF is seriously lacking, possibly as a result of the lens design. If you are not missing focus fairly often with the XP1 (and you are relying on the AF, rather than zone focus, pre-focusing, F16, etc.), then you are shooting relatively slow moving subjects whether you realize it or not. For example, no objective person who spends a morning with an OM-D and the XP1 will come away thinking the Fuji AF is up to par with the Olympus.

But, with that said, the Fuji is a very nice camera and I really like using it. I like the lenses and find the AF convenient and tolerable for most situations; but I don't have unrealistic expectations and would welcome new lenses with good AF. It is what it is; a lot of people tried the system and got out quickly because of the AF, they needed more speed and accuracy.

I have had both these camera's since day one release. With the last set of SW upgrades on the x100, it feels like it is faster af then the xp1 currently is today..

I am a creature of habit and I do not like the mash method people have mention on the forums to help decrease the af lock time... I use half press to af lock and recompose method. I also use zone and hyper focal methods.

I would venture to guess that well over 99% of the time I have no trouble with af. But there have been times when while I waited for the af to luck, due to the dynamic elements of the situation, something moved which changed my original vision for that shot. Since the x100 is a bit faster in the af lock department, I have had this happen much less to me since the last set of SW updates.

I have to admit that the X-Pro1 focus is slowish, but not unusably so.
It is pretty much on par with my Minolta 28-70/2.8 G I had for quite a while, if not a bit faster.

it is slower than a modern Nikon DSLR with AF-S lens, thats for sure, and slower than current Olympus. But compared to the GXR A12 modules (28 and 50) it is a rocket, and sufficient for MOST stuff I do.
