I wonder if anyone got a tele lens tattoo instead of a fire-breathing dragon.

A couple years ago, I went out for breakfast with some friends and the waiter had a Leica tattoo on his arm. Didn't get the chance to take a shot of it as I had the wrong lens with me. But it was definitely cool looking!

I understand what they are, and why they're important in some traditional cultures. None of those cultures would be tattooing Leicas. Let's see what that Mx looks like 50 years from now....

Look, I like my Leica...but not enough to tattoo it on my body. That just seems to speak of a slightly unhealthy obsession for an inanimate object...just my $0.02....

I was kind of hoping to see a Leica tattoo on somebody's chest, complete with neckstrap.

I was just reading today that tattoo infections are on the rise in part due to comtaminated ink and distilled water used in the ink..

I like tattoos and have a whole bunch of them, but I would never ever ever get a product or brand tattoo. That's just too cheesy.

IMHO

Pigment, not ink. 'Ink' makes tattooers, and people with tattoos, cringe. Similar to calling a photographer a 'tog,' or calling pictures 'snaps.' It makes you sound like a tool.

And unless you're getting tattooed in someones garage, you're very unlikely to get any kind of infection from being tattooed. Most infections come from people not taking care of their fresh, open wounds. Any tattoo shop would be shut down in a matter of days if they were infecting people, everything is very clean and regulated these days.
I have 40 or 50 tattoos and have never had an infection.
None of them are of Leicas.

Traditional cultures eh? So tattooing is ok for savages but not for civilized people? Because civilized (European descended?) people don't have cultural traditions of tattooing? Because contemporary cultures and subcultures who value tattooing for whatever reason are somehow invalid?

As a tattooed person, I like the look and the idea of aged tattoos. I do see how people find it ugly.

It's fine with me if some don't like tattoos. It's the ill-informed justifications that bother me. How about just saying it's ugly (those Leicas are mostly bad), or that you're following Leviticus to the letter or whatever?

I have a co-worker who developed an infection within 2 hours of getting a tattoo from a local shop. He nearly lost his arm..

I have 7 which I got back in the days when there was little regulation but had no issues..

Nah, not ugly, just boring because most contemporary tattooing is a copy from another culture. Though that classic butterfly on ankle sure is ugly

Over here tattoos from the indigenous culture have real meaning, then all the white folk go and copy them..it looks so contrived .

pakeha, I understand where you are coming from. I know a very good tattooer in my town who goes to Australia to work often (higher pay and good surfing). She says everybody wants Native American themed tattoos from her.

All the white folk? Is it less contrived when a non-white person copies them?

I've heard that an African American getting a traditional Samoan tattoo from a Samoan registers a mere .62 on the International Contrivance Scale. If the tattooer or the customer were white though it's at least a .94
