Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

Will this start some sort of mass sell-off of used M9's as demand for m-mount FF digital cameras becomes sated.

More used m9's off shelves, being used in hand, by shooters, is a good thing for leica. Camera's that are being used require service and lenses.
Where o'where is the market saturation point for m-mountable digital cameras though?

A slightly lowered price would be good for the Leica market. Leica clears stock and M9 prices go a bit lower in the used market. This moves more "user" M9s from collectors to photographers. The M10 up-graders won't be selling their lenses, so Leica lens sales should grow.

A broader user base is a better strategy than selling Leica jewelry or Hermes editions.

The M9 was a risk for Leica, but it seems to have sold better than they expected. That has to have amortized old research and funded new development.

Why not? What would the discount have to be before you would buy one?

I'd wait until September, after Photokina.
But, I'm perfectly happy with the M9.
It resolved a lot the annoyances of the M8 that drove me nuts (UV/IR filters, crop factor).
Sure, the M9 isn't perfect but it is very good and very "Leica" in its nature.
I had and sold two M8 cameras, but have no desire to part my M9, as long as it continues to work properly.

I have been looking at used ones for a while but these discounts are making me think about a new one. I don't know, its probably wise to just wait until Photokina.

If I could afford one~yes in a heart beat! It's a wonderful camera and the introduction of the M10 will not render it obsolete.

It would be a great camera at ~$3000. The problem is, it won't get to that price until another couple of years, in which case, it will be completely outdated.

Jeez, the M9...outdated photos from an outdated camera? This again?

Folks, get out and start making photographs with whatever you desire. Too much time behind the keyboard is going to piss somebody off soon.

I must be missing something here. WHAT DISCOUNT?

I always shop at B&H and the camera is the same $6999 that it's always been. Who is discounting the camera?

Best,
-Tim

There's no point in buying an M9 now.

Unless, of course, you want to make photos with a full-frame digital rangefinder camera now.

In early 2010 I bought the M9 at a stupidly high price due to the poor exchange rate of that time. Since then it has gone with me to Japan and all around Australia. It has shot a wedding and a number of events as well as day to day happenings. It has given me more joy and often better photographs over a continuous period of time than any of my other cameras including the 5D Mark II with L lenses.

If you can afford to part with the money, if you love rangefinder shooting and the superb rendering of Leica, Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses, then get a M9. It's good enough as it is for most life situations. On the weekend I shot an Elvis impersonator gig with the M9 and 5D Mark II. The Canon with the 24-105L created a 'realistic' look. The M9 and Zeiss Sonnar 50/1.5 created 'art'.

5 posts in and Johan posted a link to a 4 page thread already, why do people insist on creating two threads of the same thing? Mod should close this thread and refer to Johan's link.
