Hypothetical Rollei question
Lets say a 'friend' of mine was considering selling their beautiful, almost flawless (few leaning marks in taking lens coating), recently serviced (2009) 2.8D Planar.
What sort of fair market value would such a camera have? And I mean RFF value not Epray value.
Thanx guys and dolls.

$850 USD plus shipping. Add $30 for a brilliant focusing screen from Rick Oleson.

Hi John
I sold just about a year ago a very clean but certainly used Rolleiflex D Planar f2.8 for around $1k. It had just been CLA'd by Karl Ehlers and had a new Maxwell screen installed. It was my second Rollei D (the first I still have). My favorite Rollei for sure. I like the meterless bodies and non removable hood models for their simplicity.
Best !

$900-$1,000 if it's in really nice cosmetic condition.

$900 - $1000 is a price fork beginning to fetch the E and even F models.
Don't reach that peak for a D model, especially if it's an early one with a fixed EVS system.

My 'friend' is having a tough time deciding whether to part with this beauty.
In absolutely outstanding shape, beattie grid screen, smooth as butter... What more does one need?

Rolleinar set and a Rolleifix
I agree on $800 being a fair price for a very good sample.

Yes it is, and the Rolleifix is an useful accessory designed to fit the Rolleiflex on a tripod without the risk of twisting the camera back.

Perhaps you should slap your "friend" on the face and kick him in the @ss (yes, you can figure out a way to do that)... and tell your "friend" to come to his senses. Why is your "friend" thinking of selling... hypothetically speaking, of course?

well, my friend... ah, you all know i don't have any friends.
i am not much for crazy, expensive and shiny cameras. i normally kick the crap out of my gear and it seems a sad thing to do to such a fine bit of gear. with that said, i am taking a bit of a break from the photojournalism thing to work on some personal stuff and this seems like a very nice partner to work with. the only niggle with the rollei is i like to shoot a little wider. new things are good though

If the condition worries you, sell it and get a beater E series. The 3.5s are 75mm, also. Probably not wide enough for what you mean, but it is a difference that can be felt when shooting.
Then again, I recently bought an E 3.5 Xenotar in great shape, except for a major crimp in a corner of the focus hood. I could have searched around for a hood in better shape, and made a decent profit selling it. But nope, it's in my knapsack on its way to getting used and getting beat up. Why should cameras in nice shape only belong to collectors? There will probably always be a few mint Rolleiflexes in safety deposit boxes in Tokyo. The rest should be driven into the ground as Franke and Hiedecke would have wanted.

Mamiya 6 has a 75mm lens, slightly wider than the 80. Also very quiet.

It's really hard to find a nice 2.8 for under 1k CLAd with a Maxwell. That is a great value.

I have a 6 with the 50mm. Smashing camera!
Thanx for the info Dave!
It really is a beautiful camera. As smooth and quiet as I have ever used and I find the rollei's incredibly useable designs.

I have found that I get the best prices for sales on eBay, vs. forums, you still have to pay the fees of course, but if your friend wants the best price he can get, often eBay is pretty good.

Would agree with that, and even go further that if you are worried about wrecking it, I would even consider a Rolleicord. Smashing little camera, and aside from the slightly narrower aperture of f3.5 vs f2.8, and the crank, am not sure it gives up much to its bigger brother. Of course, the biggest difference is price, €200- €250 vs €700- €1000 here in Ireland.

While we are on hypothetical questions here... What's the real market value of a mint condition, recently CLA'd 3.5F metered model 1 Planar with an extensive set of accessories? :P

Depends on the accessories, but mint (with case and caps with nothing else) will get 1200 or more at auction on eBay, from top sellers. Of course there are always the unrealistic buy it now offerings for much more...
