My J12 just sits there. The posted images here suggest that this lens can be quite good in the right hands. Could it also be that there are better versions and not so good versions of this lens?

Had three black J12s, gave away one to a friend and kept two...all three had similar performance.

Sorry if I gave the impression I was directing the comment to anyone in particular. It was a warning to buyers that you have to be careful when you buy one off the -net.

Not all J-12 lenses are as good as these ones are!

Caveat emptor.

Black M39 J-12. Sadly, a bit of camera shake.

Be careful buying off the e-bay.
I also have both Contax/Kiev and LTM versions and both are pretty capable. Both are black version LZOS and fairly recent manufacture (1980 and 1982 respectively). I haven't done any controlled tests, but my opinion is that the Contax/Kiev version is slightly better. I got the Contax/Kiev copy on eBay, but from a U.S. seller (under $25 USD...whoo! Hoo!). The LTM lens, I purchased from an online friend on the Pentax Forums.

Unfortunatly my Jupiter 12 seems to lack some sharpness on the pictures, quite a difference to my Industar 12...

I just found a nice 1957 KMZ j12 (wanted to try an original Biogon, did not found one at an not outrageous price). I like it very much, except for the distortion (and I do not think I goes quite to infinity).

Yes it does flare against the sun

If it doesn't go to infinity, it means it was reassembled incorrectly after DIY service. Optical block was screwed in too far or not enough. I had the same with J12 in Kiev/Contax mount.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check the infinity more accurately on a really far away object (up to 50m looks OK and quite sharp).

Really a great lens, once you get to know it. I have run into "ghosting" in some backlit situations:

img010.jpg by Thanimalia, on Flickr

But not so much in others where I might have expected it:

img016.jpg by Thanimalia, on Flickr

It is after all a 50 year old lens.

Another which I like for some reason, but I don't know why:

the J-12 is a superb lens, it really doens´t seem to be a $60 pice of glass...at 2.8 it´s not the best but is decent...at 5.6 is really sharp and contrasty...

It has a lot of distortion in the manner of the summaron...but for the price is unbeatable...

This one is taken at 2.8 and it´s jpeg, no PP, and no sharpening added in or out o´camera...

Bye!
