that's a cool lens, definitely with some mojo. check out maddoc's work with it. he has some great, great stuff, dreamy, aglow.

Having used a number of 35mm Leica lenses (two versions of Summaron, three versions of Summicron including the asph. and two versions of Summilux-pre) for many years the Summilux-pre has been my favorite, however on film and B&W..
Last month I tested it against the Summicron asph. on a Nex-5N. Both are crops from same size enlargements of 100cm, both at f2.. Can you tell which is which?
(BTW, the Summicron asph. has a new owner now..)

And now the crops from 100cm enlargements at f5.6. (In the same order as above)

The first ones are the Summilux 35/1.4 pre-ASPH shots, the second ones are the Summicron 35/2.0 ASPH shots.
Can't say it makes much of a difference, but the ASPH shots are a bit sharper and a bit more contrasty.
I wasn't in the market for an ASPH due to size and price, and seeing this only corroborates my choice

 Just the opposite.. The first ones are the Summicron 35/2 Asph. But they really are so close..

I voted "other" b/c my current favorite 35 lens for Leica M is the Canon 35/1.8. Yes, it's soft wide open, and only focuses to a meter, but stopped down a bit it hits a sweet spot of moderate contrast and sharpness that looks great in both b&w and color. It's also very compact and well made. Since I mainly use the 35 lens for street photography, and usually zone or hyperfocus, the "drawbacks" of this lens aren't big deals to me. And sometimes the softness wide open is attractive. I've also got the CV 35/2.5 PII, and the Canon 35/2.8, and have had the CV Ultron 35/1.7. Those lenses are also nice, but there's something special about the way the Canon 35/1.8 renders.

Now that's funny. I was so sure about that... Same time, it means my new 'Lux is sharper looking to my eye than that 'Cron ASPH

bobYIL - thx for the comparison.
I have both lenses and would agree. the preAsph Lux is softer in resolution which then presents itself as LESS contrasty than the Cron Asph; and in the pics, the Lux preAsph shows a warmer/yellow glow compared to the Cron Asph.
I bet a shot of the preAsph at 1.4 would show even more discrepancies b/w the the Asph Cron in terms of IQ, since the IQ of the preAsph usually takes a nose dive at 1.4, but it does give you that extra stop, which is the best argument for me to keep it.

About the color renditions do not regard these pictures as a reference source; for they have been shot by taking care of correct focusing only (sharpness comparison); all are OOC from the Nex-5N, no WB care, even no precise exposure settings.
My actual experience with color rendition: The Summicron V.1 (8-element) has the "coolest" hues.. Summaron 2.8, Summilux-pre and Summicron Asph. have more or less same color rendition however the warmest one is the C-Biogon.
With B&W film, the Asph. has the most contrast (not for me.. dense shadows, rather harsh higlights.)

Funny thing with this thread.
It keeps showing up on the front page whenever I load that. It always says BobYIL posted 16 mins ago, while in fact it's been six days.
Let's see if this post 'fixes' that.

Doesn't it get bumped back whenever someone votes?

I'm perfectly happy with the two 35mm lenses I have in M/ltm: Summaron f2.8 and Canon f2.

It really depends on how much dough you have to spend. But either the asph version or the voigtlander 35/1,4 sc (not the 1.2)..

Voted "Other".
I have Summaron 35/2.8 and Canon 35/1.8. I like both of them a lot. Sold the CV 35/2.5.
Both price and my preference for wider or 50mm are reasons why I never went for a cron/lux 35 (and probably would not or a while).
Based on all what I have seen I would go for a 35 lux asph as I have no modern/asph leica lenses in any focal length.

I have the Konica 35mm f2 M-Hexanon but I find myself very tempted by the Zeiss 35mm f2.8 C Biogon.

Yep, one vote will keep you as the last poster of a few minutes ago even years later if no-one else posts but others keep voting.....

I stuck the Color Skopar 35mm f/2.5 on my M9 about three months ago. I think it's stuck, I just can't seem to take it off the camera anymore. It's that good, and tiny/light as well.

In the photos above the Summicron has distinct magenta at the edges of highlights. Looks very "digital", imho. The Summilux performs much better methinks, giving a more film-like impression (at least on my screen).

And my 35mm Summilux ASPH FLE is stuck on my M9. I just can't seem to take it off the camera. In fact, I think they came out of Leica as a fix focal length camera.

Always went for the Summicrons (have all types by now), finding:
the pre asph summilux too soft - (must admit it is attrive since it is so tiny);
the asph summilux is really a great lens but too heavy -;
the nokton too heavy and I don't like its rendering....
never tried the Biogon 35 (I have the 25mm though which is a perfect lens, but read that the other Biogons are not comparable resolution wise)

35/2.8 C-Biogon is a great lens for creamy bokeh, top sharpness, flare resistance, almost no distortion, size, etc., if one can live with f2.8 and warmer colors compared to Leicas.

Could be. I'll probably have to buy another M9 so I can use the Nokton 50/1.5 again ... but I'm afraid the same thing is gonna happen again. This gets a little pricey, ya know? ;-)
