My strap broke off
While walking down a city sidewalk, my neck strap just released itself from my camera body (M3), I caught my camera within an inch or two of the pavement. In 40 years of shooting, I have never had that happen.

Akiva--yikes!
Glad to hear the M3 is OK.
What kind of strap was it?

Sounds like a tremendous catch. This can mean one of two things.
A) This is a long-awaited sign from the gods that you should finally go for a professional baseball career.
B) You are in fact some sort of secret samurai, like the girl who catches the falling cup in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

I keep telling people, but apparently no one listens. Velcro on the strap and velcro on the epaulettes or nape of your shooting shirt, jacket or vest. If the ring, clip or whatever attaching the strap to the camera fails, the velcro will keep the strap from sliding off and the camera will simply dangle by the other end of the strap.
It has happened to me a couple of times with heavy motor-driven SLR cameras as well as lighter rangefinders, without any problems or broken gear.

Wow, nice catch. If it were me, instead of catching it I would have probably accidently booted it down the street mid-stride.

Ha ha... me too!
I check my strap before donning my camera -- every time.
I also check that my lens cap is off (but I probably should have saved that for another thread that is sure to happen again.)

I like those grippers very much ande use them on all my cameras. I wrap the ends with electrical tape, because this has happened to me, too. With an M3 yet!

I use the Domke straps without the clips...only because I didn't want that to happen to me...A few of mine need replacing due to them being really worn out...
Good catch...I didn't want to hear that another camera hit the ground due to an old leather strap or a clip disconnecting...

I have recenntly pulled out my M7 from the camera bag, and to my astonishment I've seen that one of the lugs came off from the camera body, and the strap was loose... Evidently I have broken the screws securing the lug by pushing the camera into a bag that was packed too tightly... The moral: I need a repair, and a bigger bag !
This is the one I've just ordered, they are really beautiful:

scary, but this is why i always loop my strap around my arm, if one of the lugs fails i will still be able to catch the camera before it hits the ground.

Not to thread-jack, but... I've found the little black plastic thing on the standard Leica strap to be somewhat fragile. Mine just broke in the bag. Is it possible to replace that one part, or do you have to buy a whole new strap?

Hate to burst your bubble but mine was wrapped with electric tape, also.
