don't want to sound smart-assed and I am by no means a post processing expert, but the shot with the lock shows a heavy magenta cast, probably introduced by scanning. 90% of the time it's not too difficult to remove color casts in Photoshop or a similar picture editing software by just applying the auto-correct options. I took the liberty to apply auto-levels and auto-correct color to your picture and it looks much better already IMO. The auto functions have their limitations and a pro probably wouldn't use them but it's better than nothing. Apart from that, the image looks a bit blurred or out of focus, maybe motion blur (shutter time too long?). There is a simple shutter testing tool sold by a guy from Romania or such on Ebay for 10 Euros or so that works quite well to check the effective shutter times on these old folders. Sometimes it's not even half of the value indicated. If you need any further advice just write me a PM or post in the forum.

Art Institute, Chicago -- the Modern Wing. From the footbridge leading away to Millennium Park. Zeiss-Ikon Super Ikonta 531/2, Adox CHS 25 (Efke 25) film. Probably about 1/50 and f/11. Souped in Ilfosol 3 (getting tired of this stuff). I had to sharpen and adjust levels only slightly.

Thanks Tom (and also Ron) for the kind words. Googling a bit, I've discovered the "Nichols Bridgeway" is the name of the foot-bridge from the museum to the park, from which that museum picture was taken. It put me at perfect height off the ground for the proper (mostly non-Scheimpflugging) perspective. The view of Millennium Park from there is also good. Below is with same camera, same film, similar settings. No PP on this one though, other than resizing.

Hello John,

thank you for your response and the image processing.

This photo was taken after decades of non-use and before a CLA which was done last fall. The picture showing the beetle was done afterwards.

The shutter tester seems to be a interesting item...

Both pictures were taken without a lens hood.
Looking at the first pictues, there might be scratches at the negative due to film transport.

I am quite happy about the quality of the pre-war Tessar.

Hi Thomas,

I wonder if the bright areas at top-right of your bicycle picture are actually from very minor light leaks--or processing artefacts--rather than flare? At least to my untrained eye, I wouldn't be sure which it is. Have you got bright areas of similar shape and location on any other pictures in this roll that you did not post? (It would be hard to tell with the first picture you posted, as the analogous area of the frame might be in the nearly-white sky.)

Agreed on the quality of the lens. I've got the same on my 531/2 of same vintage (about 1937).

Very sad about Sandra Keller, by the way. Only 25 years old!

Vasile sells cheap shutter testers, with the schemas that are freely available everywhere on the WWW. But, for those less skilled with the soldering iron, it is an excellent option. I own two of his devices. Took a bit until he shipped them, but nothing important unless you're in a hurry (and probably if you contact him directly he can speed up the process)

I like these. And I note the top and bottom right-hand corners are knocked off a bit.

I've just run four films through my newly repaired Voigtlander Bessa 1 and notice too that the corners of each shot aren't quite square.

I'll post my best shots as soon as I've scanned them. But is the "not square corners" a feature of using folding cameras? Or of using Voigtlanders? Or is there something wrong with my camera!?

Almost all photos were cropped a bit back in the old days, so it was not considered critical. You may not have noticed but your viewfinder probably shows about 10% less than the full negative.

However, it does kind of look like you may have a bit of dust caught in the corners there.

Thanks Tom. I reckoned it was probably that. BTW the B&W photos weren't mine. I was just admiring them.

The are taken whilst walking the "Coledale Horseshoe" above the village of Braithwaite near Keswick in the English Lake District National Park. In the background of the top picture you can see the Helvellyn range, Helvellyn being one of the four 3000ft peaks of England.
