Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

Leica 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH Loose / Play?

Leica 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH Loose / Play?
I just purchased a second hand 28mm Elmarit-M ASPH, the lens generally in good condition however I noticed slight play on the front end, perhaps it is a bit loose?

Just wondering if this is normal behavior?

Perhaps a video will explain it a bit better:

Bit of play due to previous user picking up or holding the lens by the hood i guess. You can live with this but better hold the lens by the rear of the mount when mounting and unmounting it IMHO. The focus tab may help if need be.

Mine doesn't have the kind of play yor video shows. It does has a bit of fore & aft play on the aperture ring.

I have an Elmarit 28--and it has no play. None of my lenses do.

I don't have this lens, but one of my ASPH wide-angle lenses loosened in front, possibly from airline vibration. I was able to tighten it by tightening tiny screws around the front area. Now I carry a jeweler's screwdriver on trips. I wonder if the lens in question has any small screws visible?

Edit: I checked, and as a matter of fact, the lens, in my case, was the 28mm ASPH Summicron. Coincidence?

Can't find any screws around that area on the elmarit unfortunately. But its ok it doesn't move the front element so it doesn't affect the picture.

My 28/2.8 ASPH has no play. It is also sharper than my 75/2.5 or even my 35/2.0 (last pre-ASPH version). In short, it is a wonderful lens. If yours doesn't fit this description, I'd worry about the play.

I did something risky, I unscrewed the screws on the bottom and managed to push the lens group up and reveal the tiny screws that holds the front piece together. Apparently one of the screws is loose. I tightened it and now there is zero play. Very happy

Interesting. Mine has no problems, but I'd like to know which screws you turned in case I do one day.

The screws that control the tightening of the front piece is behind the aperture ring. To adjust it, you'll have to take off the screws on lens mount. Then the whole unit can be pushed up a little so you can adjust the screws. Unless the problem becomes quite bad line mine I wouldn't attempt to it, or at least send it to Solms.

My 28mm Summicron has play at the front I think its probably caused by taking the lens off and on using the hood.

There is supposed to be none. It needs repair.

Another example of the new cut rate construction standard at Leica.

Handle by rear of mount.

My new 28mm has slight play around 0.1mm on the aperture dot ring.

Quite a task to mount it on my recently CLAed M8.

Loose lens

Send the lens to DAG. He will put heavier lube in it, which they should have done at the factory in the first place.

My 28 cron has the same left right play---I drag it around a lot in the backcountry, and I'm sure the hood issue mentioned above must be the cause--I will send it off to Dan.

What's interesting is that lens case calls for the lens to sit upside down WITH the hood on----which considering the issue, does not seem the best idea
