About the only time I would bother with having a lab scan (as well as soup) my C41 film, is when I'm somewhere way the hell away from home, and decide to soup my film before heading home, in which case having scans made is sort of a good "safety." Otherwise, all the scanning gets done by me.
As a number of people have already mentioned here, the quality of scanning depends on the people you're dealing with. You have to pay for the service, one way or t'other. Some are better than others, just as in many another business endeavor.
