Project Information, Rules, and Timeframe.

What is the Street Photography Project?

The project came to me when Roger Hicks mentioned that a government run street photography project would do a lot to legitimize the craft. While it occurs to me that we can't get our governments to do anything, we can do something ourselves. This forum can pull some weight, I would think. Rangefinders are a very good street photography tool. In fact, a lot of good street photographers swear by them. By doing this project we establish two things: one, that rangefinders are one of the best tools for street photography and, two, that street photography is an art form that should be recognized with just as much respect as any other, photographic or otherwise.

So I wanted to do a project, using our rangefinders, to help make street photography more visible in the art community. I don't know how it'll go, but it isn't going to stop me from trying.

Here is the basic information you're going to need to participate in the project.

Timeframe

April 1 to June 30 2008.

What we're looking for

Essentially, we want to see your interpretation of street photography. The point of the project as I envisioned it originally was to show as many types of street photography as possible. This will create a wide variety of images and ideas on the art form. Black and white or color images are okay. Images must be taken during the April 1 to June 30 timeframe. This is to encourage new photography. I'd also like a short or long blurb on what "street photography" means to you.

Where will this be going?

I'm thinking optimistically. I like to think that, with this project, the sky is the limit. There's no reason why some images couldn't hang in a show at a gallery. There's certainly no reason why we shouldn't try doing another book. And I don't see a reason why, if you'd like, prints shouldn't be sold. This can be as big or as little as people want it to be. All we need is people willing to do it.

The Few Rules

These are the rules that govern the project. They are there to keep the project focused.

- This is an RFF project. If you want to join the project, you join RFF as well. This is not to leave people out, but more to make sure that everyone has equal access to the information. Considering the main discussions are going on here, it would be more difficult for people who are not forum members to get all the info.

- Rangefinders only. This is a rangefinder forum, therefore this one shouldn't be that hard.

- Camera/lens/film/developer will not be posted with the photos. This is to keep the discussion to the images themselves instead of what was used to produce them.

These are the only three strict rules I have. Anything else is negotiable.

Final Words

Someone gave me some good advice earlier in a PM that I'm actually following for once. This is my project. My baby. I'm putting a lot of time and hard work into this. It should correspond as much to my original vision as possible. I truly hope that this is fine with everyone who will participate and we will make the project a smashing success. I can't do it without you guys.

Sounds good! How many submissions per person and where to submit?

I really don't want to put a limit on how many submissions. The real idea here is to get everyone interested in street shooting involved in it by giving them a reason to go out and shoot. I don't want 50 per person, but anywhere from a decent amount of images to 1 or 2 would be fine I would think.

A better way to do that would be this: post only those images that you're most proud of in the project gallery.

It was getting confusing.

Three other threads closed with directions to this one.

Sounds like fun. The "project gallery" will, I assume, be a sub-gallery on RFF?

As far as I've established, that's the goal. If it's an RFF project, the gallery should be on RFF I think.

Nope, you aren't too late.

I'll be refining the official rules and posting a thread on exactly how many submissions to the gallery are accepted, discussing the option of doing a book, how we'd decide on the contents of said book, and taking suggestions on other venues that may be interested in being part of this project.

The project is good, but a lot of good photographs have been taken over the years and it would be great to use those as well.

What do you think?
