Slight Forum Reorganization, Some New Forums July 1st, 2007

The "Non Rangefinder Forum" was created today, recognizing that contrary to RFF rumor, non rangefinders may exist after all. The existing Point-N-Shoot, TLR Forum, Scale Focus 35's, and Half Frame Forums were transfered from the crowded and confusing "Miscellaneous Topics and more" forum. New subforums added to this group are the "Diana / Holga / Pinhole" and "Evil SLRs" forums.

The "Clubs, Critique, RFF Projects, Salon" forum was also created today. The existing "RFF Photo Projects, W/NW Words no Words, Critique, Photo Exhibits, and Regional Clubs by Geographic area" were all transferred as subforums from the "Miscellaneous Topics and more" forum. Added was new subforum for the popular "RFF Salon" that we were already doing.

In mid July a completely new type of major forum will be added as an experiment to see how it works out with RFF. The idea is to give RFF members easy access to some recognized experts.

My prediction:
One year from now this site will be re-named "Classic Camera Forum" (CCF) and range finders will be a sub-forum.

Nothing wrong with that at all - and it will drive more traffic to the site.

Actually since the site now already have a 'non-rangefinder'-forum supporting a number of cameras the name 'Rangefinderforum.com' is already not descriptive of this place, so maybe bite the bullet and rename it already now?

Why not?
It's already a site for multiple types of cameras. And don't say 'because it will always remain a rangefinder forum' - cause with the addition of these forums it is now more than that

RFF has always had forums dedicated to non-rf cameras. Nothing new here. Just a reorganisation of sorts.

Rangefinder people have long posted at RF about non RF cameras, usually in the off topic forum or Miscellaneous Topics and more forums. Today over 1,000 existing slr posts were transferred into the Evil SLR sub form, and that is only a portion of the existing posts. RFF people were already posting about non RF cameras.

Isn't this all throwing darts with a blindfold on? Trying to predict the future belongs to fortune tellers. The late John Kenneth Galbraith was quoted as saying that economic prediction was invented to make the signs of the Zodiac look legitimate.

Let's face it - as nice as RF cameras are, they have their limits. I have a Leica M4-2 and three lenses for it, and I'm not about to part with any of them. But I'm old enough to well remember when Pop Photo was running articles about "RF vs. SLR". Remember their Norman Rothschild? He was a fan of the old classic Exaktas - a camera that by now looks like a primitive (left-handed) icon of the past. They were NOT for action shooters!! But they focused closer than any RF and regardless of the lens in use, you saw what you were going to get in the pciture.

I'm not about to put down either SLRs or RFs. They are both legit tools, and each has its place and its use. As for point & shoots, they are nice for the Christmas-Easter-birthday crowd, but arent't to be taken seriously by anyone who wants to really get the shot.

Because RFF is a forum for people who appreciates the discreet, sleek, deliberate, manual, -style of photography often associated with Rangefinder cameras.

The fact that the same people with the above ideal are also camera enthusiasts who collects, ehm... obsessed, and trade other kinds of camera *does not* change that ideal.

This *ideal* is what determines the "identity" of RFF and the community that it facilitates.

Personally, I think it's very refreshing to see SLR as a sub-forum of a photography related website, not the other way around.

A big 'Thank you' to Stephen for doing this. And also to the moderators.
