I think 600 us dollars for a R-D1 is really a bargain! Don't know why you are still hesitating...... I will take it right now if it sit in front of me.
If I can find one in 900 us dollars or even 1000 us dollars, I will still think it is a reasonable price. But I do think 1500 us dollars for this old fashion camera is overpriced. Yes,this camera have good performance and is original M-mount RF digi camera. But nowadays, we need something new!
When Epson release R-d1X, I think Epson is fooling us and cheating money..... No big difference! Still that "antique" CCD.....! Epson really need to do something now. I think we have given enough time for Epson to prepare for a real new stuff.
Now, I will buy a 900 dollars RD-1 or Fuji x-pro or Nex-7. Wish Epson can give us R-D2 soon......

there is no camera like the r-d1, period.
outdated technology? yep.
weird rewind crank? uh-huh.
mere 6mp? you bet.
loud shutter noise? check.
but still it's a camera that once you put to use feels so much at home. at least it did for me and I believe it does for many others. sometimes i do consider selling it, but then I take it out for a spin and I change my mind.
I find it a better deal than an M8, to be honest: no need for those IR filters that will cause ghosting on photos, it can take ANY LTM (except for a russian 35/2.8, I guess) or M lens, even the DR cron and collapsible lenses, has a better higher ISO performance than the M8, has a better magnification finder (it's pretty neat to frame with both eyes open), looks like a cheap old film camera (for me it's a plus, as it's less robbery-attractive), and the RAW files are nice to work with.
It's a camera I should just keep as long as it works.

I paid 89k yen for my upgraded rd1 in a shop in Osaka, unboxed, only with charger. The flip screen is not a flip screen in the sense that it has functionality. It only serves to protect the display. I would prefer the x version with the bigger screen. I also have an m8.2 which is also great, just different. The epson has nicer high ISO performance. In fact, I think the rd1 beats every single camera on the market when it comes to resolving noise! It just looks like grain, perfect!
Mine does have a problem with vertical alignment of the rf. I need to get that fixed.

I walked down to Shinjuku today and had a look at the used camera stores for the first time. I didn't see a single R-D1, but plenty of R-D1s;s. A flawless R-D1s goes for about 110,000 JPY (1,450 USD), but then we are really talking flawless. Not a scratch, not even around the on/off-button where most of the used ones have lost some paint. They start going down to 100,000 JPY (1,300 USD) if you are fine with a scratch here and there, but overall only cameras in very good shape. I will try to find more time and have a look at a couple of other stores some time in the future. Oh, and a new R-D1xG was about 150,000 JPY (1,950 USD).

I just bought an R-D1s today, should get it in a couple days I hope. I paid £655. I'll have to sell my Canon 5D to pay for it but I think/hope the RD will keep it's value better.
Really looking forward to getting it.

I am about to pick up an R-D1s, and I was hoping someone can shed some light on what I should be looking for? Sorry about my ignorance but are there signs that the camera has alot of wear and tear and should be avoided?

I agree. Everything is in the right place. It just feels right.
I've had mine since Januari 2009, bought it for $1600 with a VC 35mm f/1.7 Ultron. It was already 4 years old then.
It has served me faithfully for the past 4 years through every type of weather. It does still work despite a lot of dust and dirt it must've collected over the years, and I doubt I could get $700 for it.
But I'm about to send it off to Japan for servicing.
"Why?" you ask. Because I love it! That's why!

I really do love mine and wish I had more opportunities to use it, every time I use it I just end up standing there smiling like some idiot.

I just bought mine from the ads here for $1050...worth it to me, as I bought it from the original owner and it had just been back to Epson Japan for an overhaul this year. It's in very nice shape.

I was able to purchase Joe's R-D1s($1150) the other day and can't wait for it to come in. Now the plan is to send in my R-D1 and get the focus slop fixed and whatever else needs attending to that way it'll be tip top.

Anyone have any interest in an RD1 with a broken LCD screen? Works fine besides that, and is in good condition. What should I be asking for one in such a state?

Ended up selling mine for $1200 couple months ago.
Asked for dibs to the buyer in case he decides to sell it someday, but I'm happy to see he's loving the camera!
tekst, I think you could check how much it'd cost to fix the broken LCD, then factor that into the price vs the market price.
