Battery stuck

I'm unable to change the battery in my Epson, the flap opens fine, the battery partly slides out but something is preventing releasing all the way to change it,any ideas?
I don't want to force it, it would appear that there may be something catching on the battery itself, please don't let this be a send to Japan issue !!

How long have you had the camera?

The reason I ask is I've just had a good look at mine with a torch to see what could possibly catch. About halfway down the battery chamber there is a detent lever that pops into the gooves on the side of the battery that locate it in the charger. I've never really noticed it before but it does take quite a deal of force to get the battery past this point when removing it ... this is just there to stop the battery actually falling out when the cover is open and it holds the battery about a centimetre proud of the base plate so you can grip it to remove it. I'd be giving it a bit more effort ... I don't see that there's anything there that can break and even if that detent clip does break it wouldn't stop the camera connecting to the battery when it's fully inserted. The contacts are right at the bottom of the chamber and seem very unlikey to be able to snag the battery itself.

That's interesting Keith, the camera has been in my possession about 6 months or so but seen little use from due to life getting in the way. it actually came from Oz and I bought it from RFF, VVGC and little use from the original owner.
I have changed the batteries before but have no recollection of this being an issue, hence my reticence to start heaving on it.
Whatyou say re. stopping the battery falling out makes sense, my Fuji and Panny have similar but it is visually located on the top of the battery and easily shifted with finger pressure.

I'm going to give it a bit more pressure,here goes...

Nice to hear the problem is solved.

The R-D1 has poor battery life, but fortunately it uses a battery type that is widely available and cheap. There is some however quality variation. Some third-party batteries are simply very different in size, although all the model numbers etc. match, and they can be difficult to insert into the camera. I have continued to use even such batteries and they never gave any real trouble.
