50'cron aperature ring

I just got a 50'cron v4 from the classified. I notice that the aperture ring shifts up and down so much that it makes a sound when I does it gently. Also it can go a bit beyond f/2 and f/16 (noticeable when I look through the lens). This is my first leica lens so I don't know what to expect. I only have a zm lens and it clicks in place as you expect it to be. Is this normal?

Some Leica lenses do go beyond their f-stop limits - not a problem. Not so sure about the aperture ring movement however. Am sure others will comment

While we are at it, there's one more thing. The rear most glass is ~1.5cm from the mount. Normal?

This is how it was designed. Perfectly normal.
As for the aperture ring, my ring moves quite lightly but clicks decisively into each half-stop. It does over run slightly, which is normal.
I'm not sure what you mean by "up and down". Is that front and back? I would not worry about a little play as long as everything functions correctly, as long as it is not excessive.

Thanks for the clarification. I was hoping Leica's craftsmanship would exceed that of Zeiss's.

i don't think it has anything to do with craftsmanship

the mechanism of the stop clicks is the reason why you can turn it past the max and minimum apertures. it allows for a little excess movement because it's basically a piece of spring steel that slips into notches in the aperture ring. when you slip it out of the notch to either minimum or maximum it finally hits the stop.

as for the rattling aperture ring, it should not be loose, if it's loose there is likely a screw loose somewhere or the aperture ring is not securely screwed on.
