Yashica Electro, Battery PX28
Hi guys,
just need to ask a question.
You might remember my old posts about my black Yash.Electro 35 GT - just bought a new one, an Electro 35 GS.
This one is in very very nice shape, probably a good buy, it even does the "clunck". YEAH!
Well... the battery - I need a battery.
Some internet sources suggested the PX28L (V28PXL) 6V battery, padded with foam and a spring. OK - the Yashica Guy battery adapter might be better, but shipping from US will take some time...
Ok, it does NOT work. Damn!
The battery packing says 6V, but my multimeter said 6.48V. What the heck?
I'm now afraid that I killed the circuits...
And what do you suggest me to do to get the Yashi working?
Thanks for your help!
Steffen
======================
Edit:
it worked now in my old Electro 35 GT, the battery light is on, and the meter works.
Do you have any ideas why it does not work in the 35 GS?

The yashica electro 35 is very forgiving, anything from 4.6V to 6.5V should work. So 6.48V should be fine, and if the Yashica is not working something might be broken. Or your battery adapter is not working
For my own GS I use a piece of plastic pipe, sealed on the bottom with a coin. The battery goes inside, and the rest is filled with a metal strip.
I will try to post some pics. of it later.
cheers.

Clean the bottom contact very well or else you might have a burnt connection inside.

thanks for your replies.
Especially since HoodedOne's post I feed relieved... 6.48V is a lot compared to 5.6V...
Well, probably the connections are loose inside the GS, I will check on it this weekend or next week.
Thanks!
Steffen

it should be fine what the battery delivers.
With lower voltage you get dimmer lights or non-working batt check lamp, that's the only difference, the shutter and meter works with all PX28 replacements.
I would suggest the silver version since it lasts quite long.

I bought a very nice 35GS lat weekend and replaced the missing "clunk-pad". First I put in a 4LR44 and a screw to fill the empty space, then I used a CR123A and two LR44; both versions work fine on B&W film.

I had a similar problem with a GSN once. I replaced the old battery with a compact lithium battery, a plastic pipe, two copper coins and a spring. When the camera didn't work, I initially panicked, but it just turned out that the wire to the battery compartment was rotten away. Re-soldering it solved the problem.

On the new camera, is the paper plus sign sticker still on the battery cover? If so, it needs to be removed for the smaller batteries to make proper contact. If that doesn't help, it's very likely that the battery wire has corroded off the top of the battery compartment...

My 35 GSN is running quite happily with a 3 volt lithium (I think it's a 123LA) and an A76 stacked together. Read it on the net, tried it, and it worked for me. And they are cheap and easily available.

that looks very professional - much better than my foam solution (I will take some pictures this weekend).
Took of the bottom and top part last night, and (unfortunately) no loose wire or so.
The lower connection to the battery compartment does not look very corroded either, neither do any of the connection on the top.
Does anyone of you know how I gain access to the upper part of the battery compartment? (where the spring is)?
is there a point on the top, where the wires are (see img)
 *
where I can measure the 6V from the battery (against the bottom part of the battery (which is +) )?
*image adopted from YashicaGuy, thanks for that
Thanks for your help!
Steffen
@b1bmsgt:
the thing with the sticker was the reason why my battery replacement initially didn't work with my older E35GT. That's a massive trap!
In the GS one, the sticker has been removed before.

Yeah!
Just got my silver one working; loose wire from the upper battery connection.
[Removed bottom and top, removed battery compartment; soldered an extension to the loose wire and connected it to the battery chamber pin]
The old connection was greenish and ugly...
Gonna check tomorrow if the times are allright.
Thanks for your help with the battery issue.
Could we make one of the battery posts sticky to help people with battery issues?
[Unfortunalty my black one is somehow strange... Exposure is too long, but does react to incoming light - daylight about 1/5th, low light 1/2, very low light more than 1sec. Yellow light is on all the times.]
Well, thanks guys.
Steffen

Steffen, I had the same issues with the too long exposure. This sounds like a rotten pad that has to be replaced to make the camera work properly. The yashicaguy has instructions on his site.

Battery adapter for the full sized Yashica Electro series... Tried many. The best is from eBay seller bennfoto.
Better than the plastic tubing-based solutions. Much better than coins and springs.
No relationship. Just a satisfied customer.
