Camera repairers in the UK?

Hey guys, I just wondered if anyone knew of a good camera repair person based in West Sussex in the UK?

Don't know about West Sussex, but you can ring Newton Ellis in Liverpool. They recently serviced a Widelux F7 for me.

Plenty in the UK but I have yet to find one I would recommend in West Sussex (where I live).

Your local camera shop, if you still have one, may still use someone local but whether they are able to tackle your job is of course unknown...so they'd post it off somewhere which is what you could have done in the first place and saved their 'cut'. Ask the forum for someone to tackle a specific repair on a specific camera and you may get several rather more helpful answers...

I have used Newton Ellis in Liverpool, too: very satisfied indeed with their work on my Rollei B35.

I also had a great experience with Miles Whitehead (http://www.mwcamerarepairs.co.uk/) in Kent . He repaired my Yashica Mat TLR. Not Sussex, but nearer than Liverpool!

Not in West Sussex, but Luton Camera Repairs deal with Olympus gear but they can service other cameras. Give them a call to check if they will work on certain cameras.

Thanks for the input guys, I gave camserve a call which was mentioned by Tog. I didn't get great first impressions as the main repair guys weren't about so I ended up speaking to, what I imagine was someones wife who basically knew nothing. The guy I do need to speak to is away on his hols so I'll have to give him a call on Tuesday.

If anyone has had any experience with these guys I'd be grateful if you could give me some feedback.

I get the feeling that camera repair/servicing is becoming a dying art.

I've used a few repair specialists in the UK before.

Newton Ellis (http://www.newtonellis.com/)
Serviced my Leica II, Canon IV SB and Canon 7 50mm 0.95 lens.
Whilst servicing my Canon 7 lens he received another one from Peter Loy for refurbishing too - meaning he was able to match them up identically for a better overall job on it. The repair technicians are friendly and have quite an extensive knowledge of vintage gear.

Luton Cameras (http://www.lutoncameras.co.uk/)
Great with Olympus gear plus all work carried out comes with a six month warranty. The staff know what they are talking about and they can source rare parts with little hassle.
(They found a donor OM-3, spare parts for a OM Zuiko 40mm f/2 and Pen F camera body!)

Sover Wong (http://www.soverf2repair.webs.com/)
A Nikon F2 (and F) master technician. Don't send your F2 to anyone else.
Serviced my F Black Photomic head to full working order.

I've recently contacted Miles Whitehead (http://www.mwcamerarepairs.co.uk/) and I sent him some gear. Had a quick chat about the gear and he genuinely sounds like he knows what he's doing.

Hope this helps.

Another recommendation for Newton Ellis, whom I've used for over 20 years for a variety of servicing and repairs on numerous cameras and lenses.

The quality of their work is very good, but turn-around times can be surprisingly long; and they're not cheap (why should they be?). Suggest you ring--they're happy to discuss requirements and give estimates etc.

Regards,
D.

Well I've emailed Luton Camera Repairs, mw camera repairs and gres for quotes so we'll see what they come back with.

Once again if anyone has had experience with any of these companies I'd be grateful to get some feedback.

Protech Photographic are in East Sussex:

http://www.protechrepairs.co.uk/about_us.html

They used to do a lot of repairs for Brighton based pro photographers, handled all the repairs for MXV Photographic (now sadly defunct), and fixed my Nikon F2S and Olympus XA some years ago.

I believe they also guarantee their work for 12 months.

Thanks for that John, I have emailed Protech so hopefully I hear back soon.

Yes losing MXV was a great shame, I brought a Contax G1 from them many years ago, it was a great shop. About a year ago when I was having one of my many GAS attacks I tied to find them only to discover the shocking news that they were no more.

Protech Photographic has been a blow out, they have got back to me very quickly but they tell me and I quote - "I am afraid we would not service your 35SP"

One down three left.

That's a pity.

Still, it's better that they give you a straight answer than mess you around. I've dealt with repairers before who've told me that they can do the work, only to find out that they either can't or keep the camera for a very, very long time (in some cases years rather than months!).

Hi,

I can recommend both Michel Spencer (http://www.camerarepairs-r-us.co.uk/) and Luton Camera Repairs.

LCR's have done both digital and film cameras for me and Michael has done OM-1's etc.

And I'll second/echo what has been said about Newton Ellis and Co.

Regards, David

PS With specialist camera repairers you have to accept a postal service and it has the advantage of concentrating all the knowledge, parts etc in one place and often one man. But who could argue against that?

Many thanks for that David.

I'm thinking that Luton Camera Repairs would be the people to use as it is a Olympus 35 SP which I'd like to get serviced and I understand they are Olympus specialists.

Big thanks to everyone who took the time to post, it's much appreciated.

I had a 35SP that I wanted to repair too, but was missing the spot meter button. Luton will rebuild the camera completely, but they don't have spares for the 35SP anymore.

Cheers for that Nash, hopefully if I do need any parts they'll be easy to find.
