Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

What's the backup body for 2012-13?

I'm pleased to have an M9 and am wondering what the next 18 months or so will bring in the way of a backup body. I like the looks of the Ricoh GXR and am very tempted. I'm waiting to see what else might come up. For instance:

1. An m4/3 body that takes the great m4/3 lenses that I also have but that also is more optimized for shooting with Leica M lenses. (For instance, I wish Panasonic had something like that interesting "peaking" system the Sony and Ricoh cameras have.)

2. An m4/3 body that has an improved sensor and a built-in eye-level viewfinder. The Sony NEX-7 seems like a great camera this way, but it lacks the first-rate lenses to go with it, in my opinion.

What do people think? Will Leica or Panasonic come up with a compelling new body fairly soon, or should I go with the Ricoh?

When the M10 appears your M9 will turn into a backup body....

Nobody knows the future. Leica is coming out with a APS-C solution by the end of the year supposedly... that could work for M lenses as a back up. I'm going to assume you aren't getting a M10 or cannot feel good about having a M10 and a M9...right?

And if there's an M10 there will be a spate of barely-used M9's on the used market, which from an ergonomic standpoint at least would be the ideal backup for an existing M9.
