Pakistan street 1957-1958

In 1957 my future godfather was sent to Pakistan (Karachi), by his employee (Hispano Suiza Netherlands)
Recently a photo book was found with pictures from this period. And I was totally surprised to find a lot of street pictures.
I decided to scan them. But since there are 200+ pictures, it's gonna take a while.

Its funny how little does change in underdeveloped countries like Pakistan.

If you´d post these as pictures from your recent trip, no one would notice.

Wonderful images.

Pretty cool that he worked for Hispano Suiza, too. Did he happen also to leave a car in your care?

this is cool. would love to see more. this is just 10 years after their independence. the pictures are crisp and seem to express the excitement of the time. keep em coming.

Imagine how awesome 50 year old digital files would look. Just like new!

Doubtful.. droplets of inkjets tend to harden with time and are prone to fall off partially.

Nothing can substitute a layer carrying the "information" impregnated into/onto a medium, be it fiber base or resin coated.

probably he meant real digital files (which anyways could be unreadable after 50 years because of let's say windows 30 or damaged CDs/HDs)

Hahaha, that would be awesome. But the fact is, that the Hispano Suiza factory in the Netherlands was a weapons factory. Makes you wonder, why the went to Pakistan.

I've no indication at all on the film that was used. We never found any of the negatives from that time. They're printed on Agfa paper, and we've found Agfa negatives from different times. So my best guess is Agfa.

Not a bad idea. And that way I would also have a place for the other paper-work that I have. (tickets, menus, flightplan, letters)

These are really lovely! A window into a different time and place, and yes, they look modern, but I don't think of it as much as unchanging underdeveloped countries (I don't think that's true) but more that there is a clearly modern aesthetic to some of these shots. Either that or street photography, and the underlying rhythm of urban life, is more or less constant. All interesting ideas that popped into my head as I looked at your image. Very cool, please keep sharing them and, I agree, a photo book is in order!

Also, there's a great couple of posts on street photography right now on The Online Photographer, including a good discussion of editing. As an editor now of a big body of work, might be worth reading...

Hi everybody,

I haven't been posting any new pictures here lately. Late last year my godfather passed away, which didn't leave me in the mood of scanning the Pakistan images. Also earlier this year, some envelopes with negatives from this trip were found. All negatives were hand-cut in strips of 2. Only by comparing the cutting-edge, I was able to reconstruct 12 complete rolls of 6x6 negatives. And about 8 - 9 rolls are incomplete.
And although I'm still behind with the scanning of my own nagatives . I decided to pick up the scanning, starting with the negatives.

Here's a example

The photos in this thread are wonderful! Aside from their technical merit--and they are excellent--they are also interesting, affecting, and some of the best street photography I have seen in a while. Thanks for sharing!

This is a wonderful collection of images of a country that is now in turmoil. Then, life was simple. I hope that you can post more images here.
