Damn damn DAMN! Sound's lie THE Davidson collection to have. But having bought Outside Inside it's hard for me to justify investing so much $$$ in dear all Bruce. By all means he's worth it, I just wish there was a choice for this book when I was buying the Outside Inside. |

Print runs are suitable candidates for conspiracy theorists.
They seem designed to ensure that as soon as the run is sold the demand still in the market pushes up the retail price well above the original selling price. The benefit appears to be to those who "bulk" buy new then re-sell sealed copies later.

But how does the publisher benefit from that, unless they hoard a portion of the run then sell later through a 3rd party? I don't understand the economics of publishing, but when you look at the production quality of the Black & White set, you wonder why Steidl did what they did.

I think it must be that a publisher would prefer to sell out a print run, with known costs and income, than risk having copies left which would obviously reduce profit. What puzzles me is that "they" seem to err on the side of caution with a wide safety margin every time. i would have thought with practice "they" would have improved their forecast of sales.
I don't pretend to understand the economics of publishing either I just hope I catch new editions I want before they sell out.

Just bought some books by Dorothy Bohm (vastly underappreciated photographer, IMHO). I can sit and look at her shots of Paris and Venice all day.....

As a young boy, too long ago  , I had the privilege of growing up in a Dutch town cultural environment with great visual artists and photographers in my proximity. I soaked up everything they showed or told me. Inspirational people who changed my way of looking at the world and its depiction in art forever. Vincent Mentzel and Peter Martens were two of those photographers. The latter died way too young, twenty years ago now. It was beautiful to see many galleries in my town commemorating him today with exhibitions and a new book out. Beautiful edition of Peter Martens - Few loving voices after so many years.

I've posted before regarding writings on photography by photographers. There are many great titles from Robert Adams, Shore, Gohlke, etc.
Just received this new release from Steidl yesterday and have already been through several of the essays. Wide range of photographers from Weston to Wall. And essays on other artists as well including Alfred Hitchcock, Chris Burden and the great hard-edge abstract painter, John McLaughin.
No photos, but beautifully printed and bound in cloth with a clear mylar jacket.
