Noorderlicht Photography Organization needs your help!

Hi,

Noorderlicht Photography is an organisation in the North of the Netherlands that is closely related to a large number of photography-driven festivals, exhibitions, galleries, book releases and more, both national and international.
Noorderlicht ('Northern Light') receives annual funds from the Dutch government that help it exist, expand, develop and exhibit work from both up and coming photographers from the Netherlands and the rest of the world.

The funds that are granted are annually divided based on an assessment by the Cultural Board of the Netherlands. This year there's a crisis going on that also has had it's effect on the amount of money available for the funds.
The Cultural Board has advised agains the annual funding for Noorderlicht, effectively ending the Photography community that Noorderlicht has become over the years.

Noorderlicht has started a separate Facebook page that allows photographers from all over the world to connect to and post to, so that the pressure on the Cultural Board will be on when they have to decide on the appeal against their decision. The page is here: http://www.facebook.com/NoorderlichtHasToStay and your 'Like' is welcome, as is a support message on the page!

Pls, pls, feel free (or urged) to post this message forward to other photography forums you are active in! Pls understand I'm not asking this as a personal favour (I can only wish to ever exhibit at Noorderlicht or have them put out any of my work) but as a favour to the photo community worldwide.

Help Noorderlicht survive!

Looks like an incredible asset to photography. It's sad to see the most culturally deep and long term enriching programs be the first to be cut during difficult economic periods. Yes cuts and reduced support happen and can usually be weathered but to be cut off completely.... What value is an economic system that does not support art and communication?

It's easy to click on John's links and add a vote of support for Noorderlicht. I just did so:

Thank you Andy and Robert,

I'm positive the guys 'n girls at Noorderlicht appreciate that!

This last weekend I attended the opening of the exhibition OFFSIDE - Football in Exile, by my buddy Dirk-Jan Visser. He's created a book and an exhibiton to portray the one and only adult football club in Ngorno-Karabach. He's used the football club (that cannot compete internationally because the region is not recognized as a country) to show the frozen conflict that has Ngorno-Karabach in stasis.

It's that kind of photography that makes Noorderlicht so worthwile, since it provokes discussion, reflection, education, etc.

Y'all, like Robert said, it's easy to click those links and support!

Hi Johan,

You should send PDN (Photo District News) a message. Let's hope that the Cultural Board reconsiders their error.

Regards,
Robert

Dear Robert,

that was a great suggestion, thank you! I just put a mail out, let's hope they agree on the importance of this and run it!

+ 1 Facebook like... Keep us posted on how things go. Sad. Bombs, wars? Blank check it seems. Bail-out funds for the greediest jackasses? Fine. But arts, culture and that which unites us? Sorry - no funds for you. What a world.
