Mitch - saw you got a GRD4? Curious how that's impacting things...

I just picked up a GRD1, hasn't even shown up yet (still have grd2 and 3, played with 4 and will end up there as well, no doubt). But curious to see how I get on with the original (anticipating B&W jpeg use).

And STILL mulling a GXR... (struggling since I already have M43 gear, not to mention a 5d2).

But the GRD's remain nearest/dearest...

Eager for an update!

I'm glad this thread bounced up, with all the links. Thanks very much, Mitch, for starting and sustaining this discussion, and keeping the focus on vision, spontaneity, and opportunity, rather than limitations of sensors or lenses.

The GRDIII goes everywhere with me because what it sees is not what I was able to see with OM2 or M43. As Moriyama acts out with his SLR-to-the-eye gesture, something gets lost or turns away in that moment. The little GRD has been a Yoda to my bumbling Luke in a discipline of one-handed shooting, hip shooting, quick framing. I came to rangefinders late (58) after SLR and m43, and because the GRD inspired/prepared me for RF seeing/intuition (if not for the laughable difficulties that accompany late adoption of meterless film technology). I've also adopted the GXR/M-mount, but use it mostly with the VF for eye-level/waist-level composing: like an SLR. And though I do like the pair that way--GXR with 50-75-150 capability, GRD for getting close with 28 or 21/1.9--GRD solo is like a favorite pocket notebook/fountain pen.

Dutch photographer Wouter Brandsma's dedicated exploring of the GRD and other small-sensor notebook cameras deserves a shout-out, too, in this thread: http://wouter28mm.wordpress.com/.

I've been very impressed with the work Wouter does for many years now. I remember when he first starting posting with a Ricoh GX100...almost made me buy one!

A bit too early for me to make a full evaluation because I've not yet shot enough with the GRD4 having been too busy to use it enough. All I can say is that I think it is more of an improvement in image quality over the GRD3 than most people think, or have indicated in their opinions on photo forums.

In any case the ability easily to switch between SNAP focus distances that I was concerned about has been brought back by the last firmware upgrade. However, I have tried shooting with the Auto SNAP distance setting, and that seems to work well — although I have yet not evaluated that fully.

I shoot almost always film. I had a Ricoh GX200 and loved the one handed approach. Thinking of a GRD4 to get back to that as I assuming the sensor provides a little better image quality. Oops, was I allowed to mention a GX200?
Also love that i could put that GRD in my pocket.
