120 APX100 in Rodinol question
Quick check as it's a new film/dev combo for me.
Mass. Dev. Chart suggests
13min @ 1:50
20min @ 1:100
I'm assuming that's with 10sec agitation every minute
Does that sound right?
I'm doing a William Wegman impression with my new pup, Bella.

For 1:50 dilution it's 10sec agitation every minute but for the 1:100 (20min) I'd only agitate every three minutes. This recipe is "Ferider's special".

I got started before reading your posts (anxious to get going) and I've started on the 1:50 for 13minutes route.

Hi Frank
Apx100 in Rodinal has become my default film I love the tonality.
I rate it 80 ASA when I shoot and develop following the 'massive development chart'
13 mins @ 20c using 50:1 is my stock route
Agitate for for first 30 secs then 10 sec for every minute which I always make 4 inversions. It seems a very tolerant combination, I have just processed some APX100 pushed to 200 due to low light at a wedding and still love the results .The development time jumped to about 23 mins so it doesn't sound like it's very sensitive to time in the tank .
So yep sounds about right to me
Chris

The negs are drying and look good. Maybe I'd like them a bit more dense.
A new star is born. I'll scan later when the film is dry.

Great stuff
Personally I'd keep the development the same and decrease your shooting ASA a bit. But thats just me.

I would say, that to begin with, if you are after great tonality, shoot it at EI 50 or 64 max, and develop a bit shorter, like 10 minutes. At EI 100-125 it is a slight push, and you could go for up to 13 mins, but heaven forbid to agitate every minute. After having tried all sorts of agitation schemes, I've settled on a slow initial 30 secs and a couple of inversions every 3 minutes thereafter. Stand method invariably causes uneven development and frequent agitation prevents edge effects and increases grain.

mfogiel, that last picture is a great example of when film grain is just wonderful. I want to rub it all over my body.

Must be a Rodinal day. Just developed Arista EDU 400 1+50 in Rodinal. This is my 1st time using the brown stuff, (usually use HC110) 35mm for 11 mins. Negs are hanging now.
Frank can you explain what a dense neg looks like? These do look different than what I'm use to seeing with HC110 but don't know if it's in a good or bad way. Might be a bit flat looking.

Frank, I didn't think APX100 was in 120, where did you buy it?

I got a few rolls from a friend who retired from film photography. It is old/expired but stored well.

Very well done, Frank. I might even try 1:25 for that light and pose.
Marek is right on the money with regard to agitation. Frankly (sorry, Frank!) I often agitate even less, but my default dilution is 1:100 unless I need greater contrast.
Also, in daylight APX 100 loves a yellow-green (XO) filter. This is 35mm and I have posted before, but the XO filter really made this one sing. Agitation was as per Marek's prescription above.

Here's a (better) scan (I think).
Note to self: greater distance from background needed.

Is APX-100 a cubic grained film or T-grained? (No info in their technical specs..)

Nice results Frank. If you are new to Rodinal, then you are doing very well. It is a very versatile brew and responds well to the gentle approach with agitation every 3 to 5 minutes keeping highlights under control in dilution 1:50 or above. Rodinal truely IS what you want it to be. Have fun designing your own favorite recipe.
