Canon p with a 85mm

My frame lines in my canon p are 35,50 and 100

I want to use my canon 85mm. Do I need a separate finder?

Or could I just approximate between the 50 and 100?

You don't need a dedicated 85mm finder, but it will definitely help if you need precise framing. But, as you suggest, you can also get by by just approximating the 85mm framelines.

Perhaps try the approximation method first. If you're happy with the results, then you won't need a special finder. If you find yourself cutting off the heads of people, then you'll need to spring for the dedicated finder.

I'm glad I have the 85 finder with my Serenar 85/1.9 when the scene is crowded or the edges are tight. The originals have parallax correction. Guesstimating works if you reference the inner edges of the 100mm lines, and leave a little room. It's a bit easier to use on an M with the 90mm framelines.

The chrome Serenar or black Canon Lumi finders are findable on the Bay, though FSU 85 finders are more common and usually cheaper. There's also a guy in Tel Aviv selling (home-made) finders on the Bay for $20/shipping; he might take an order for an 85.

If you do invest in a finder I strongly endorse the Nikon universal "varifocal" finders -- they are the best I've used in terms of visibility, clarity, parallax, everything. They're much smaller than all the other universals I've seen, which is nice, but the frames are not small. They go from 35 to 135 and when I had a IIIf I used them exclusively even for the 50mm shots. Here's a good picture of one -- ignore the insane price. I've gotten both of mine for around $100. I happily use a VC/ CV 90 VF for my 85 Russian. "Close" only counts w/ dancing, hand grenades, horseshoes.....and VFs.

For precison viewing/composition in tight photographs, nothing beats an external finder. My 85mm Canon Finder is great to use, it is the earlier version for the VT cameras, with the ball-bearing on the bottom of the finder. So on my Canon P, I use it with the Canon "Coupler Finder", so it works (with parallax lever) on my later Canon bodies.

Here is the whole thing put together, with my 85mm F1.5 Canon. I have a roll of Panatomic-X film in this body, that I need to finish
