Fuji X Pro 1 & iPad Not Playing Well Together?

First and foremost I'm in love with my new X Pro 1 w/35mm F1.4 lens. So much so I'm about to purchase the other two lens and just go shoot!

The problem I'm having is with both my iPad 2 and my wife's iPad 3. We need to be able to shoot and load directly into the iPads via our SD Card adapter from Apple. With all other SD Cards this has never been a problem.
The files will load onto the iPad with no problem, BUT when I put the SD Card back into the Fuji it locks up and will do nothing??? When I try to turn it on the sensor cleaning comes on and then nothing except a dark blue screen. If I then remove the SD Card from the X Pro 1 the camera acts normal again.
The only way to fix this is to put the SD Card into my MBP and open it. I can then put the SD Card back into my camera and reformat it and use it as normal again.

Is anybody else having this problem with the iPads? Could it be my camera or card? It acts the same on both iPads so I know it is not that.

I have seen this problem before on my x100, when using aperture on the Mac. After import, aperture will ask if I want to delete the files before eject. When I put it back it the Fuji it seemed to freeze for a very long time. If I do not delete the files it, it never freezes. I then format in camera after every import on Mac.

I have always suspected that the issue could be one of two possible issues
1-files that Mac or aperture created
2-it messed up the Fuji data base when I told it to delete the pictures before eject

I have never used an iPad for importing so no sure if this could be your problem. If u are using jpg+raw I wonder if iPad import is messing up the raw file and left the file descriptor in an open state.

I have this problem with my X100 too, on both ipad and ipad3, with both Sandisk Extreme Pro SD and the older Ultra II. In both cases the camera freezes on switch on for up to 10-15 secs then comes on as normal.

Only solution is to reformat the card.

Like GaryLH I found a work around. Don't delete the images after import rather, keep them on the card and eject from the iOs device. Then reformat the card to delete all images and freshen up. Re-formatting cards after down/upload regardless of the camera will improve the cards performance. It only takes an extra few seconds.

Apple computers seem to leave small files on memory cards after they've been used in the machine. I wonder if it's these files that are causing the problem? Formatting in the camera would remove them and clear the problem.

I met a fellow a couple weeks ago who was using an Eye-fi card in his Xpro-1 for wireless transfer of images to an iPad 3. He said it worked very well.

I have the problem irrespective of whether I keep or delete the images from the card in the ipad.

As mentioned several times above:

Always format the card in-camera. Never delete photos using OSX or i0S.

Alternately, once you have formatted the card in-camera, set the write-protect switch on the card to on as soon as you remove it from the camera. Don't forget to reverse this step before you place the card back in the camera.

iOS may not support raw only transfers or even raw plus JPEG transfers until Apple support XP1 raw files.

Fuji pretty much behaves as if OSX ans iOS do not exist.

Thanks for all of your comments. I got the two to work together now by not deleting the images on the card from the iPad. Also, when I put the card back into the camera it takes about 15 or more seconds before the camera will turn fully on and allow me to format the card. This is where I was going wrong, I wasn't waiting long enough!

Hopefully your 15 sec wait will only be required the first time you go through this process. I put my cards in iMacs and MacBook Pros and don't have any star up delay before formating the card in-camera. But all I do is let Lightroom import the files or copy them to a temporary folder. Maybe your iOS app writes to the card no matter what.

Did u try the write protect tab trick before inserting into iPad?

Well, here's a strange one. I plugged my SD card into the iPad via the Camera Connector and it read all the RAW files. I even brought a few into the iPad and edited them in Snapseed.
