Tom Abrahamsson of RapidWinder.com It is almost never that an inventor improves on a Leica product so that it is better than the original Leica product. Tom holds that distinction with his RapidWinder for Leica M rangefinders -- a bottom mounting baseplate trigger advance. In addition Tom manufacturers other Leica accessories such as his very popular Soft Release and MiniSoftRelease shutter releases. Tom is well known as one of the true Leica rangefinder experts, even by Leica. IMPORTANT READ THIS: CWE Forum hosts have moderation powers within their forum. V Elmar vs Focotar II

How much difference will I see in a print between the 100 4.5 V Elmar and the 100 5.6 Focotar II ? Probably printing up to 11x14 from 6x6 to 6x9 negs. I pretty well print on graded paper for the most part.

For stuff up to 11x14 you won't see that much difference. Stop the lens down to f11 though. The Focotar -2 100 was mainly aimed at the color printers of the 80's (usually coupled to a color head on the enlarger). Larger stuff 16x20 and beyond - the Focotae-2 100 will show some better edge sharpness - though not as much as the price difference warrants!

Thanks Tom, sounds like it should be fine for my work. I also have a Devere I'm currently using for mf and 4x5 but I'm getting a IIc and also not sure if it has all the carriers. I've noticed the price someone is asking for the Focotar and I have to wonder how close that is to what the lens is really worth.

cheers
