D700 dust shaker sound?

Hi, I know this is primarily a film SLR forum but I know there are quite a few D700 owners out there

Like most D700 owners I notice that it seems to collect a lot more dust than (say) a D300. I also notice that my D300's dust shaker works great, unlike the one on the D700.

What I did not realize until last night is that while I can clearly hear an extremely high-pitched chirp or squeak from the D300 when cleaning the sensor, I cannot hear anything from the D700. Is this possibly an indication that the cleaning mechanism isn't working? I still get the "Done" message afterward.

Can anyone else verify whether total silence from the D700's dust shaker is normal?

You might want to check the setup menu to make sure cleaning is turned on. If it's anything like the D300 you can set it to clean at start-up, shut-off, or both. Turned off is also an option, this may be the problem.

Can't say I have ever heard the sensor clean operation working and I have it set to clean at start up and shut down. Just checked and with the camera up to my ear I think I can faintly hear it working. If somehow your camera has been reset the default setting for the sensor cleaning operation is off. You either have to do it manually or choose one of the automatic settings. It is covered on pages 392-394 of the owners manual.

My D700 is silent. It was very audible on my D300.

I should have been more explicit - I was talking about not being able to hear anything using the "Clean Now" option in the menu. I re-set it to clean at shut-down and it still doesn't make any noise (unless it's beyond my hearing range).

However, it's good to know (thx Pirate and vossarian123) that the D700 is indeed silent, unlike the D300.

My D700 is set to clean when I turn the camera off. I can distinctly hear a chirpy/mousy/high pitched/squeeky (!) kind of sound every time I switch it off.

Compared to my D3 the D700 sensor seems really dust free after 10,000+ actuations and I have never thought about cleaning it. The D3, in comparison, had spots all over it when shooting a frame of clear sky after (probably) less actuations, very annoying...!

The D700 cleaning system so far, for me, seems really good!

I've had mine for nearly 3 years I think and have changed lenses quite a lot in that time. I've never had to clean the sensor once and it's turned off in the menu. Best digital I've ever used.

Never worry about the sound or the lack of it..

I've got two cameras with anti-dust shake mechanisms.. A Nikon D90 SLR and a Sony NEX-3 mirrorless. The D90 is absolutely silent in sensor cleaning, while the NEX makes a very loud high pitched screech. No problem with that sound. But what I do have a problem with is that it's not effective on the Sony. Every single time I change lenses on the NEX, I've got to manually clean the sensor with a blower. The built-in sensor shake is completely balony and can't get even the simplest of dust particles off. Contrast that to the D90; I've literally swapped lenses hundreds of times, never had to clean the sensor once, and it remains 100% spotless..
