V600 does not recognize frame correctly..help

Trying to scan some 6x6s using the generic 120 film holder.
The negs are not scanned correctly, part of the frame is cut from 1 neg and shows up with the next one..and so forth..
I have strips with 3 negs each, there are some spacing differences between the frames in 2 strips, but the problem occurs even in strips without spacing issues.
How to manually tell the scanner that it is a 6x6 neg?

Are you using Epson's software?

I'm not at home so I can't tell you the exact names that the program uses but in the configuration in I think the third tab, you can enter the size of the neg: 6x6, 6x7, etc. Once that is set, it should make the thumbails correctly.

The software for Epson comes with the default to "show thumbnails". Turn it off so you can free form the framing on each slide. That's what I found on my V500 using the Epson software. I had no control over the framing as the scanner was instructed by the software to frame for thumbnails only.

The only time I find I have to turn off the auto thumbnail option is for 6x9 negs. For every other size It always gives me the whole frame accurately.

There is another option that tells the scanner how much space to leave around each frame. I always set that to the max which ensures that nothing is getting cropped out in thumbnail mode. You always have to crop out the border, or, most of it, afterwards in PS but it's better than having the computer crop off the sides.

As Kuzano stated, turning it off gives you complete control but I find in most situations choosing the right neg size and making sure the "border cropping" option is set to not cut into the neg is faster.

Yes, I would double check your settings in the Epson software. In the 'professional mode', there is a button for 'preferences' I think ... In there you will find a pull down menu for selecting the format of your medium format negative frame size (6x6, 6x7, 6x9) ... I am typing this from memory so I apologize for any mistakes ... But that has solved the problem for me in the past. I have encountered the same issue before, and it always seems to go back to that little setting buried in the 'preferences'. Good luck!

In professional mode....

uncheck thumbnails

do a preview scan

manually select each frame

choose your settings (rez, size, etc) then save this setting (with all frames selected) ie-6x6, 2400 150 16 bit etc etc

when you run epson scan again, this should show up , if not, choose it from the pulldown

repeat for every other format you shoot (35, 6x7, 6x9 etc)

Got it, there is a "configuration" button at the bottom of the main page where film size has to be selected manually.

Very useful as I have encountered this problem on my V500.
I also find that if I scan using the left hand side of the 35mm carrier it seems to pick up the electrical tape running along the scanner base which shows as line on the scanned neg but not the thumbnail.
Avoidable by using just the right hand side of the carrier but not when scanning an MF neg like this.
Any solutions ?
I should point out that this was taken when I was twelve using a 1930 folder so forgive the quality.

I have a similar issue with the v500 and epson scan where it consistently crops too much of the negative (35mm). I know I can turn off thumbnails and select the area myself, but this would add a few extra steps to my workflow that I really don't want to do. Where is the option to max out the area it scans?

If Epsonscan can't do this, do the other scanning programs have this option?

I can't perfectly quote it as I don't have my scanner connected atm..but there is a "configuration" button at the bottom of the main screen while in professional mode..you can select a whole bunch of options there. Hope it helps.
