Sold a photo for a book cover
One of my photographs is being used as the cover for a novel being published by Breakwater Books, a small Canadian publisher in St. Johns, Newfoundland. I've sold a lot of photos for commercial uses over the years but this is my first book cover, unless you count the photo I donated to the yearbook class at a small town high school in Michigan who wanted one of my photos for the back cover of the school's yearbook a few years ago.

The book cover

The original photo
The book is at the printer's now and will be available next month.

Congratulations, Chris. It's a nice image. What did you shoot it with?

I like your photograph a lot. Minimalistic, but meaningful in a scary way .
I love reading fiction among other things, I hope they give you a free copy from the 1st batch.
Like the other poster asked: what did you use to shoot it?

After looking at the 2 pics another time, I think I like your horizontal one better. In their vertical crop, they cropped out the front of the house with the door right below the pin, I think the house with its front in your version gives a better perspective. But that's just my opinion and ofcourse they have pros working for them.

LOL, yeah when you sell your pics for other people's uses they always have to butcher them somehow to fit their layouts. This isn't too bad though, I've had worse done to my pics

Hi Jim, how are you? I haven't seen you post on RFF in a long time, didn't know if you were still around! I shot it with an Olympus SLR and 50mm f1.4 Zuiko lens. I was really close to the clothespin, pretty much at the closest focus distance, about 18 inches. I think I shot it at about f5.6 on Tri-X. It was at an abandoned farmhouse in a rural part of Allen County, Indiana. Same county the city of Fort Wayne is, but the farmhouse is about 10 miles outside the city in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah, they're putting my name and website address on the back cover. A lot of times with stock photos there's no credit if its something like an advertisement, but music CDs, books, and magazines usually put my name and website somewhere on it.

2 Thumbs up for the sale of your photo. Always glad to see a straight photo as the final choice as a book cover. I assume that you had more than one photo in for consideration on this project...is this the photo you expected to be your front runner? I like the photo...simple and direct. Best Regards...Laurance

They already knew what they wanted when they contacted me. I had no idea i was being considered...they found the image online using Google Image Search, like it, and emailed me for a price.

Very interesting to know the "buyer" had such a clear idea of a good fit between your photo and the concept. That must make the sale even more rewarding. Laurance

Congrats on the great work. If I can ask how did they find your photo? I have one magazine cover that was found on Flickr. I would like to promote some of my work. Thanks

That's great. I'm happy for you! I love that style of photo, and it really fits the book's jacket design well.
Closest I've ever gotten to this was when the designer of a pamphlet for a charitable fund-raiser found a painting of mine on flickr that she wanted to use on the cover. She wrote me about using it and I offered a free license for that particular use, given that it was a charity. Was a nice feeling to be "discovered" like that. I got a few of the pamphlets in the mail. Was a proud moment, as I'm sure yours is for you!
