What would be causing this?

The "flares" around the sproket holes along each side.
At first, I thought that I wasn't fixing for long enough, or the fixer was exhausted, but it doesn't seem like that's the case.
There are several photos that ended up with this...
Any ideas anyone?

If it happens only at the start of the roll, then you've got very sensitive film where light can go into the film canister from the film leader. Rollei R3 is one known for this problem.

If it's the whole roll, then you've got a leak in your camera's light shields.

Could internal haze in the lens be the culprit?

Haze would cause an even milkiness all over.

How about agitation during developing? If you were using a high-dilution developer, insufficient agitation can cause uneven developing densities like this. Do you see this more in areas adjacent to the sprocket holes?

I think Zorkikat is on to something with his suggestion of agitation.

The increased flow of developer through the sproket holes sometimes makes the area of film around the holes denser, hence lighter on the print.

Try agitating more frequently for less time (like 5 seconds in every 30 seconds).

Yes, I also think its an agitation problem. You should try less agitation more often, or change the style you agitate, so if you only invert try one invert and a turn etc. You need even out the flow of the developer in the tank.

Hi, FWIW, I too have faced it once with the lab developed scans. It is as though there are "spotlights" shining down from the sprocket holes to my subject. I thought it was the camera's fault however previous frames were completely fine. Took it up with the lab, and presto, it was their fault. Blamed it on the machine which stopped agitating. Their attempt at scanning and touching up was pretty much useless. =x

I'd lean toward too aggressive agitation being the cause as well.

thanks sepiareverb...i think that that may be it.
i changed my agitation (more) to try to compensate for lack of contrast.
thanks to everyone for the advice.
