A&A Evans Walker Bag: Who Has One?
I have thought about buying an A&A Evans Walker bag but I wanted to see if anyone on RFF could share their experiences with it. That is, if someone has one.
Is it somewhat waterproof? The A&A website does not explicitly say it is waterproof. What all will fit into it? I'm looking for something low profile, somewhat resistant to water, and big enough to hold 2 lenses and 2 bodies (1 body w/ lens attached, 1 body w/o lens attached).
Info or suggestions???

I have the Evans Walker bag for about 2 1/2 years. I live in Florida. It has been through everything, rain, sand, lots of sunshine. Never a problem. But I would not throw it into a swimming pool. Anyway an awesome bag.

I bought the "Oskar's One Day Bag" recently. Perfect size for me. Fits my ZI with one lens mounted and would hold two more lenses if I had them. Plus there are two pockets on the front, a pocket on the back of the bag, a zippered pocket on the flap, and a small zippered pocket on the inside of the flap (perfect for several rolls of film).
Overall construction is fantastic. The canvas feels like it's treated and I would describe it as water resistant. I haven't had it out in full rain.
I think you could fit one M-mount (or Contax G) RF body with lens mounted and have room for the other body and an additional lens. I will look more closely at this tomorrow and post another reply.
The Evans Walker is, however, slightly smaller than the Oskar:
Oskar: 270mm long x 160mm tall x 90mm wide (inner)
Evans: 240mm long x 150mm tall x 65mm wide (inner)
I love having the flap cover. Makes it very easy to access your gear quickly and adds weather proofing.

I have the Imagesmith and ACAM1000, made with the same canvas as the Evans Walker. They are waterproof to the point all cloth/canvas are. Meaning they will stop rain but it will soak through. I've tried waterproofing it by spraying one of those water repellent coating but transplanting a rain cover from another camera bag might work better. In light drizzle it's fine.

I think the A&A bags are very appealing. Right now I am using a Lowepro bag but it is just too boxy for me. The crumpler bag that I am using for my Nikon gear is way too big for a rangefinder kit. I would also say that the contents of a crumpler bag are more susceptible to the elements due to the way the top flap works.

Evans Walker: outside dimensions are about 11" wide, 7" tall, 5" deep.
Oskar One Day: about 12" wide, 8.5" tall, 5" deep.
I think the EW is good for a body with lens attached, plus 2 lenses and film. You could probably get away with the 2-body configuration you are looking for but it might be a little tight, and it depends on the size of the lenses of course. It's a neat little bag better suited for minimal equipment. No top flap - just a zippered opening.
The OOD has the top flap and room for what you're looking for. The extra dimensions make a big difference. It's more satchel-like. The flap helps in the rain.
I like and use both. The EW for minimal kit, the OOD for more lenses or bodies or if I need the flap. Weather hasn't been a problem, and they're well padded without being over-stuffed.

I went to look at one at Photo Village but decided against it. it seemed too "purse-ish" to me. I ended up getting a Lowepro Stealth Reporter D200.

I ordered the bag without the buckle straps so if anyones interested about it I'll post my thoughts when I get it. If you're afraid of some of the bags looking too man pursey, I would look into a crumpler 5 million dollar home, their shape prevents them from looking too feminine while still looking pretty good. Of course it's all a personal preference I suppose.... |
