Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 & Leica D-Lux 4 Shots
Pics from the LX3 are being posted in a number of different threads so I thought I'd create a thread for them here. Pics taken with a Leica D-Lux 4 can also go here as it is essentially the same camera.

Every Leicasonic camera since the Digilux 2 has come with some vague promise that the Leica version is NOT just a re-branded Panasonic but a *different* camera on the *inside*
I use an LX3 perhaps not so much because I am a wise consumer but rather because it is, at the moment, the only version of the camera available. Still, I suppose that identifying which camera was used--the LX3 or D-Lux 4--is substantive and useful for fellow RFFers.
Here's another I took tonight...

Endustry,
Thanks for sharing. I keep seeing these great LX3 shots all over the web now. I just sold my Canon DSLR (300D) & my Fuji point-n-shoot and do not have a digital camera at the moment. I am still deciding whether to go with the LX3 or DLUX4. Seems like I can't lose with either one. This is the first point-n-shoot that starts to get close to what I could get out of my 1st generation Canon Digital Rebel and that has me excited.

I have never seen it in print from Leica, in fact they never even mention the Lumix models at all. The finish is always different.

Gasp!! The black and white shots don't have that plastic, modeled look. It's beginning to appear that resistance is futile. The Panasonic lx3 will be fine for me, can't imagine how the geniuses at Leica have added anything to the camera that jacks the price by 400 dollars, beyond a red dot.

Nice one! Was he talking to you?
I assume this was "dynamic B&W" mode?

He's a Subway Preacher. You encounter guys like this more when you go up into Washington Heights and other Latino neighborhoods. He is in the middle of saying "Jesus" ("Hey-Seuss")
Yeah, I use Dynamic B&W and use PixelGenius PhotoKit Color 2 to correct the under exposure issue with the LX3 and play with the contrast a little.

So you prefer the LX over your Ricoh?

Just got my LX3 a couple of days ago. Only took a few shots so far, still learnning all the modes / settings. Tried the Dynamic B&W and think it's very good indeed, very film like. Endustry, if you have any recommendations as to settings to achieve the best from the camera, I'd like to hear. Hope to have some pix worthy of putting here soon.

Endindustry, your photos with this camera are beautiful and are convincing me to give digital another look. I've bought 3 or 4 digitals so far and have never really liked the photos I've gotten out of any of them but your black and whites look as good as any I've seen.
Can you just write a quick summary of how you use this camera to achieve them? Any special settings? Do you shoot RAW or Jpegs? Etc.

Methinks the camera is getting a lot of credit that should go to the photographer. Great for inducing GAS, but takes away from the real source of the images. Good stuff, endustry.

endustry, nice shots! Why bother with Tri-X when you can get this look with a mere digicam?
How's the responsiveness of the camera, and the controls?

Well I certainly think endustry is getting great shots and give him all the credit for the composition and the creative work. It's hard to shoot wide and close in New York or wide and far and fill the frame with interesting elements and he is hitting it.
However as it is sort of a gear head forum, if you like it or not, and since I shoot a lot of similar subject matter in a similar style and have yet to see many digital black and whites with this look to them except for perhaps from the 5D, I'm really curious. I've spent a good deal of money on "prosumer" digicams trying to achieve the look than I get from my M4P, 35mm summicron, Tri-X and Rodinal and haven't gotten half as close as Endustry so for me it's an important question.
I find that asking people who are very good photographers how they are getting their results is much more informative than reading tests written by people who take pictures of walls, cats and whatever happens to be in the room and out the door and care more about pixel peeping than the overall look and tonality. So someone like Endustry who has talent and chooses to share his results here is gold to me.

nightfly, check out the Luminous Landscape review of this camera. Pixel peepers will never be satisfied with a small sensor, but when you step back and look at the pictures holistically, the LX3 is doing an amazing job. So far, when my own pictures with it have been poor, it's been my fault, not the camera's.

These are all great shots. I love looking at them. I've got the D-Lux 4 and having a hard time using it to shoot street photography. I can't wait for it to focus. Should I use it on MF and set the focus at something like six feet? I usually get frustrated with it and pull out my M6!
