How are the Canon 35mm f2.8 and 25mm f3.5?

Are these good lenses? I'm still looking for a wide-angle for my P and I know I don't want to pay $350 for the 35mm f2.0, so I have to aim at something else.

The 35mm f2.8 isn't as wide as I'd like, but is fast enough. My P has the frameline.

The 25mm f3.5 is a little slower than I'd like but 25mm is nicely wide. The external viewer seems a bit inconvenient.

They might both be reasonable compromises, if they are good performers at a reasonable price.

If I don't get one on eBay, I may be going to Japan in the winter and could try to find something there. That's how I got the P, was in Tokyo on business, went walking, ran into a used camera store, and couldn't resist.

The 35/2.8 is a 1950's design, where the 35/2.0 is one of the latest, and best Canon design from the 60's. You win a f/stop in terms of speed, performance at the same weight.

The 25/3.5 is based on a pre-war Zeiss design. Its a simple construction (4 elements). As a user I would go for the newer Voigtlander Snapshot Skopar. I have this one. It#s a very good lens.

you are the one that beat me out on those walz filters! (ebay)
i look away for a minute (ok the whole ball game) and you scoop them up.
and i really wanted them too!!

Hi Joe,
there were *four* Waltz B&W filters on ebay last week when I lost ;-) .. 33 USD.
My 1.5/50 and 2/35 both take 40mm filters, looking for another UV, so be careful :-)

this was a walz set that i lost by 50 cents. i bid, went to watch the ball game and forgot all about it.
i didn't really need it, just wanted it.

i use only yellow filters on my lenses so if i see a uv in 40mm i'll let you know.
my 50/1.8 has a series 6 on it.

Well if all goes well, I will have a 35mm f2.8 to test within the week. McBroom's guide out it at a higher price than the 35mm F2, which is odd. It is a 6-element design, so should be sharp. The early version took 34mm filters, the late model took 40mm. If it is as sharp as my Nikkor 3.5cm f2.5 I will be very happy.

I had the Nikkor 3.5cm on the SP out this weekend. It will be nice to fire-up the 35mm lines on the Canon 7.
