Digital Leica M8 / M8.2 / M9 / M-E /Mono / M10 aka "M" Discussions about the Leica M8 /M 8.2 / M9 / M9-P/ M-E / M Monochrom / M10 aka "M": Leica digital M mount rangefinder cameras. Naming the new digital M the "Leica M" is VERY unfortunate as it will only confuse newbies with other Leica M cameras of the the past. Happily there is room for confusion with only the past 59 years of Leica M production ... since Leica introduced the Leica M system in 1953. All Hail for the Leica Marketing Department learning Leica M history!

M9P Hermes

I just watched the "making a M9P Hermes" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAfSfnykXfo) and I have got to say, that is one ugly camera for $50,000.

Leica normally nail these things aesthetically, but the Hermes edition is ugly as hell.

Thoughts?

lovely video and very nice lens and body.... as nice as the "Hyparch of Greaco-Bactria Edition" on offer in RFF classifieds.

I also think its a pretty good looking camera kit. I wouldn't mind that handmade bag, however I'm not sure I would ever dare take it out of the house based on how much it costs.

I've gotta disagree. The first thing that struck me about that camera was how clean it looks. I especially love the design of the top plate, the curve near the shutter dial. The first few days that I kept seeing it online I couldn't believe the clean lines and how minimal it looks. Then it finally dawned on my that it doesn't have a hot shoe!

One very clean looking camera, excellent execution from a design standpoint.

Let me see:
Noct = $10k
50 lux = 4k
90 Asph = 3k
28 = 4k
lenses cost about $21k, say you give it a 50% premium for the limited edition - that comes to $30k, give or take. That means the camera is $20k?

It's a beauty, but paying a 100% premium over the plebeian M9P?

The bag and the strap is Hermes so you need to add those too...maybe 3k for both.

Then the gloves and the cases....

Also the lens look like they are Hermes Edition too, so there is a premium on those as well, you cant price them like the original versions.

People don't buy these to use. They collect them. No fun in collecting a "plebeian" M9P.

Read my above post. I don't think collecting is really the reason for people to buy them. I think it's much more likely that these will be bought as gifts in wealthy circles.
Besides, JMQ forgot to factor in the price of the bag. Most Hermès bags are more expensive than an M9 . Granted it's probably not a 'real' hermes bag (looks more like a re-branded Billingham) but hey, at Hermès even a simple belt can cost between $500-1000.

If you look at prices for the 2003 Hermès MP on the used market you can see that from a collectors point of view it wasn't that good an investment. Looks like at best it held it's value (that's not even considering inflation). I think collectors are more interested in buying rare vintage Leicas at auctions instead of new special editions.

By the way, I think the Leica M9P Hermès is really ugly. Reeally ugly.

I was also struck by its 'prettiness.' I like that curve on the top deck.

That's the thing I don't like about it. There's a utilitarian beauty to the hard right-angle cut on the standard M cameras. I don't mind the look of the missing hotshoe, but that slice down to the shutter dial... I don't find it appealing.

It's collectible, and anyone who buys one likely won't lose money on it. The price doesn't really matter.

I feel even more pain tonight with the Greek people running to the banks to save what they have!

This Hermes edition is absurd, especially with a world financial collapse!!!!

Well let's not turn this into a global economics discussion... because the fact is that the Greek people have been happy to take their early retirement and rort the tax system for so many years while there have been starving kids in Africa.

So enough of that nonsense. Back to camera talk...

Agree.
The use of the bone tool is elegant in its simplicity.
Very good video.

The bag looks great, lenses look great, camera leatherette is stupid. Also I wouldn't dream of paying that much more. They can make a lot of money not charging that much. Granted I guess the idea is exclusivity... They can keep it with camera, but I like the bag, that I'd pay something for, but probably not their prices since I know dudes that can make as good or better.

Safe to say that there is no hot shoe at all?? Because anyone would have their regular M9-P with them as well, for situations that required that.

Leica must charge that much because someone will pay the price. Good for them.

I really like it. I am probably different than anyone else on this but if I had the means and wanted to blow money I would consider buying it. I would also use the hell out of it, completely destroying the value. But I am the same person that without much money figured out a way to buy a 72 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe only to take it on tour and throw it around every night risking breaking it into thousands of pieces.

I'm primarily talking about the asthetics though. Disregard the price for a second, I think it is one ugly colour. The diarrhea brown leather just looks ugly IMHO. Each to their own I know.

Not a fan of the bag either, it looks like my girlfriends handbag...

If I had the money, and was a world-famous photographer I'd be very tempted. Stunning piece of kit I reckon!
