My ongoing Photo stream using Rodinal developer: 2011

Hey so I have processed about 9 rolls of Tri-X and Plus-X in Rodinal developer so far and I plan on having an entire year using only this developer. I will be posting shots here with different films throughout the year and will be looking for processing feedback and suggestions to improve... I hope you enjoy.
Thanks,

-Sam

Thank you for saying so. I apologize in advance for all the photos of my gf... I will try and switch it up a bit but I also have to be true to the general theme of the roll.

The photos are great, lovely tonality and no harshness at all. Don't apologise for the content either; your girlfriend is really exquisite.

You're getting great tonality out of it. I should develop more in Rodinal, but I've been playing with PMK a lot lately. Tri-X looks gorgeous in just about any developer I've tried.

Looks good. I hope to be able to achieve such results. I wish Rodinal was available over here. I'm using D76 at the moment.

Looks really nice, i use rodinal for my slow films (50, 100 iso). You should also try 1+100, i like the results i'm getting from that.

Very nice, and little grain visible. I love it ! I get too much grain when I've tried Tri-X in Rodinal...
More details on time, agitation, etc., please.

Thank you. I process at 68*F, and at around 1+50 dilution for 12 minutes for Tri-X @ IE 400 and 11 minutes for Plus-X @ IE 50. I agitate very slowly for the first 30 seconds (about 8 agitation flips), and then once every 3 minutes from there on. I also throw in a few random taps and spins.

Do you use distilled water or tap water? Sounds silly but I've been wondering about this distinction, how much difference it might make.

I just use the tap water.
Thanks to the user "mfogiel" for his advice on agitation/time/chemical ratio that got me started.

Great results again, however you can see for yourself, that Tri X @ EI 400 is somewhat underexposed, so the impression is of greater contrast. Indeed, you could push the development a bit more, to get even more punch, but this could also increase the grain, so you have to experiment a bit. On the other hand, you could decrease slightly the dev time for the Plus X shots, as I see some slightly blocked highlights here and there. If you want to have a dramatic effect on the other hand, expose Plus X at EI 200, and develop for 20 minutes. You should get results like this:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/5917703...28318189/show/

This was shot on Rollei Retro 100 at EI 200 on a half frame camera.

Thanks for the advice. I am still learning how to use this Rodinal stuff. I find it extremely sensitive to agitation.
The Tri-X roll @400 came out underexposed for sure, but on my bright monitor it seems to shape up a bit. Not sure if a print would be okay or not.
My PX roll (roll #3) came out waayyy over-developed. The highlights you see are as best I could do to salvage detail from them. Next round, I will rate the Plus-X @ IE 100 and cut 30 seconds from the dev time.
Any other advice?

Also, can someone explain what happened to photo 6 in roll #4 ?

I'm no expert, but maybe a bit of bromide drag? I wonder if you'd have this result if you did a couple of inversions every 3 minutes rather than just one. My agitation routine (learned from charjohncarter) w/ Rodinal is 30 seconds initial, then two inversions at 9, 6, and 3 minutes counting down. OTOH, sow of the other shots from that roll look gorgeous.

These scans are great!

Can you tell me about your scanning workflow? I've always struggled against getting good tonality from my scans.. the whites are either blown or it scans in muddy.

The scanner really does not matter that much for web images. If you make prints from scans, that's another matter. I use a hand-held light meter as much as I can which makes negs easy to scan.

Rate Plus X at EI 50 or 64 and cut a couple of minutes off the dev time, that should give you good negs. This stuff has lots of latitude, you will not notice a difference of 30 secs.
