get the film flat instead of stopping down to f22, to avoid diffraction. Also try to bracket your exposure to get more of the films dynamic range; maybe your camera's got a "HDR function"?

I think the contrast issue you're experiencing is because you underexpose the film; I get HP5+ as smooth as TriX in both D76 and XTOL :D
