That's not a Panda- they have black controls on a chrome top. I read somewhere that the M6's that omit the Leica name on the front were made for a short period after the factory moved from Wetzlar to Solms and Leitz was out of the picture. It seems somebody thought having the name Leica appear twice on the front (since the red dot would now read Leica instead of Leitz, as before) was superfluous. I don't know how many were produced like this, or why or when they went back to the "Leica M6" marking, or even how much of this story is accurate, but there it is. BTW, Some nice looking cameras here. Maybe I need to take some shots of my M3's. One wears a nice black lizard skin from CameraLeather, and the other is rough and tumble crumbling vulcanite, and will probably get a new suit soon.

Here is a mint Leica M3 SS with a mint 35mm/2 Summicron, plus a mint M6 with 0.85 finder and a beautiful 50mm/2 Summicron first rigid version. I added the Standard Leica with the Elmar 5cm/3.5into the pack of M cameras.

Must post some camera pics of my own. In the meanwhile, does anybody have a chrome body with an Asph 35mm 'lux? I'd like to see how they look.

A pretty poor picture, but it's my M3 with 35mm 2.5 and my 1N with the fisheye. I just got the 35 today, and went shooting with it - focusing is so different than an SLR, I probably missed it on some of the shots because I'm not used to it. I shot the last 4 on a roll with the lens cap on, too, and changed the roll in the field for the first time :p

Sidenote, why do people often (not here though) fuzz-out serial numbers when posting photos of their camera?

Mike: If they bought their cameras used, there is a small chance that the item could be claimed by anyone as stolen. Nobody wants to fall into such a situation, after paying a full price for the item. Hence the missing last three or four serial numbers.

Here's my baby with the original Leica strap. I recently received a beautiful Luigi strap in "aged brown" finish. It is gorgeous! Enjoy.

The camera is from 1988. Don't know why or when they changed the front logo. I've seen some advertised as "big logo M6" and claims that not many were made etc ...........

The guy I bought it from (the original owner) passed on the following info he got when he took the camera on a trip to Solms at the end of 2005.

"BTW: according to Solms, the camera you bought was amongst the very last batch to be made using M4 (all metal) parts from the old Wetzlar factory - should last for ever with a bit of care."

Whether or not that has some pertinance to the logo, I just don't know.

I pretty certain that the logo has no ill effect on performance :)

My M6 has the big logo but i think it's a model just after the Wetzlar models?

Simon How do you find the sling in use? I 've been thinking of getting one.

The sling works well - the MP covering does not fare well for me in hot climates !
so i'm asking Leica UK to cover it in the MP3 vulcanite skin and take out the 75 and 135 framelines at the same time - price was reasonable considering. The modified winder handle also makes a big difference when rewinding film.

Thanks Simon - Apart from the sling, Leica goodies has a number of other interesting doohickeys, I am soon to place an order with them. To me, the vulcanite does look much better than any other covering I have ever seen.

Lutz is a clever guy i use his SCOOP eyecup on 3 of my M's - one thing is does effectively is keep the sweat and heat from smearing/steaming up the viewfinder window.........

Vulcanite is by far the best - the m4 and m4-2 feel really grippy and quite cool (cold) in a hot climate.

Where's the M?
Well, the M is packed and soon on its way and this IIa is eager to finally meet the old friend and competitor.

It is a lifiting experience to once in a while use a Leica without any finders at all, like the Standard Leica. It makes you enjoy photography in an oldfashioned way. I try to use the Elmar 5cm/3.5 with the finderless Leica so that I get the old look. Surprisingly, I got fewer chopped off heads with the Standard and no finder than with a Zorki-4 which has a finder. Using the old Leica made me concentrate fully on zone focusing.

All this talk about finder lines is not too exiting for me.

Well, this whole thread is not really "important", i'd say, only enjoyable to look at (and that's good enough)

Lots of good food for thought in this thread- and of course plenty to drool over, too. I could not resist. Here are some of my working kit. First up, M3 dressed in black lizard skin from cameraleather- a great cover with good feel, and tough; mounted is Raid's old Canon 50 f1.2 (thought you might appreciate a picture of your olf friend!)
Next is the beater M3 with the vulkanite crumbling off. I keep meaning to order another cover and remove the rest of the vulkanite. It has a black wasserman rewind mounted, and the 50 DR Summicron with IROOA shade.

So many beautiful M's and lenses. This thread is both delightful and dangerous!!!

Steve: I also am again surprised by the beauty of M cameras shown here. What a treasure of design and craftmanship these cameras are! The dangers are always there ... to buy yet another M body.
