Nice covering! Do you mean the customer service of Leica itself did the job or just the local dealer? How much did they charge for it? I didn't know they have this services. It looks just like the MP Classic box-set. Interesting, like it!:)

Covering

Yes, the Leica Customer Service in Solms did it. I`m not sure how much it cost, the normal cover was uneven and I asked them to fix it up and change it to vulcanit. they were very friendly and didn`t charged anything!

Agree that it's the most sexy combination I ever see. The only thing I can;t get along with M4 are its plastic end levers. By removing them, Such a M4 is perfect.

edodo 02-20-2007 04:34

thank to roundg too! I too hated the feel of the plastic tip advance lever so I wanted to change it, and at the same time the frame and self timer lever. The summicron makes it a nice pair but I must say, the day I will lay my hands on a first generation chrome summilux 35mm, this thread will see some serious p0rn!

That's how I'd like my M7! But I'd still like it exactly like the MP - MP lever, serial # on the top plate, no red dot. Black or chrome, either is fine!

M4 metal levers + my newly acquired Type I 35mm Summicron.

I left the MR meter off, the original Leica UV filter, hood, and Luigi's cherry wriststrap. Just the bare essence!

"I like the 35mm ASPH 'cron with the round vented hood (always have) and I love the signs of wear."

Where can I get such hood? I hate the square plastic one on the 35 cron asph...anyone know the no.?

I hate you.

Berliner 02-25-2007 16:10

That hood's a tad pricey, but at least it's metal...
Everyone keeps telling me the square one is more effective...I just can't beleive how flimsy & ugly it is...

rover 02-25-2007 16:20

Those M4s are killing me.

Yes, the serial no. of the round metal hood is 12504. I got it in a second hand camera shop for approx. US$75. e-bay does sometimes has these hoods available and cost approx. US$90 to $110, according to the conditions. I also love it more than the plastic square one.;)

I always liked chrome better, but your beautifully brassed black paint M4 doesn't make my life easier ... ;-)

I understood that the 12504 hood is for a 35mm Summilux. The 35mm Summicron, as well as the 50mm cron, wears a 12585 vented hood.

Lens Hoods

I ordered one of these from China last week and it arrived today. Very high quality and very well engineered:

Not metal but very high quality plastic. Looks superb on the lens.

Yes you are right. The 12504 is supposed to be make for the Summilux (except for those Limited Edition Summicron 35mm such as the hammertone) while the 12585 fits both Summicron 50 and 35 as well as Summaron 35mm. But the 12504 size also fits the Summicron too. So they can actually be interchanged. I personally love the 12504 to go with the 35mm while the 12585 to go with the Summicron 50mm due to the different in the lens body proportion.

markinlondon 02-26-2007 07:36

I have two 12585 hoods, one is labelled for 50 f2, f2.8 and f3.5, 35 f2.8 and 35 f 3.5. The other adds 35 f2 to the list but is otherwise identical in size and shape.
I use them on 35 and 50 'crons and on a thin Tele-Elmarit when I want to travel very light with a 35/90 outfit.

According to the 1976 Litz Catalogue, the 12504 fits the Lux 35 and Cron 35 (v3).
I wonder if the 12504 or 12585 fits a V4 Cron 35....

I have versions 3 and 4 of the 'cron 35 in their original packaging. Both include their respective hoods: 12504 (v3), and 12524 (v4). The 12504 is unquestionably more attractive, and fits either lens equally. The rectangular 12524 may function better as a shade, but who cares! The 12524 doesn't seat properly on the v3 due to its protuding tabs (these align on the v4).

Be aware that both hoods interfere with access to the aperture ring, so I leave them on the shelf. Actually, the aperture rings are still too fiddly, so I leave the lenses on the shelf also, and use a Summaron. :)

Berliner 02-27-2007 08:44

I agree-- it does not 'gel well' with an MP , It seems Solms only wants me to use #12526! I await a reply from leica usa to see what their reccommendation for a metal hood would be.
Sorry, I am confused now--12585, 12585H,12526,12504,12524. They range from 70-250 USD new/ hard to find all used. It's not that I don't trust you guys, but seems I have many options. I'll let you know what leica usa says.

markinlondon 02-27-2007 08:49

All original Leica hoods are expensive to buy separately from the lens. They are quite sought after since that "bargain" lens is unlikely to have the original hood and caps with it. Try finding a cap for the back of the hood on its own if you want a real challenge.

I'll be interested to see the official recommendations.

mkl - the 12585 works perfectly on the 35 'cron v4.

Berliner 02-27-2007 09:08

My new lens came with a cheap, flimsy, plastic hood. A very un-leica like hood-to me. I have never bought leica new until recently, and this was a surprise. I still can't believe it says leica on it...And I LOVE Leica! I am now on a quest for a hood worthy of this lense...

Now we're talking hoods, my 50 DR Summicron came with a non-vented 12571J hood, bearing the same indications for f/3.5, 2.8 and 2 50 and 35 lenses... So even more to choose from :)

Here are both the vented and the non-vented hoods on the 35 and 50mm Summicrons.

Great, 2 nos. of M4! In fact I also have the vented and non-vented hoods and love them both. I prefer to use the non-vented one with my chrome M and the vented one with my black M. No particular reason, just like the look.

Got this exactly 2 weeks ago. M6 Wetzlar Classic. 35 Summicron V3
I have the round, metal hood for it but left it off for the photoshoot : P

It works better, too...though it sure lacks the art and science of teh 12504 hood. :(

Berliner 02-28-2007 09:22

The 'look' doesn't bother me so much as that it is plastic and rather flimsy. Anyway, leica usa also cautioned that this(12526) is the dedicated one for the 35 cron asph. They also informed me that #12452, (for 225 USD new) is black paint and metal and will suffice. This is the one..!( I can live on sardines for a couple weeks, right?)
