Some days ago I was playing with the Nikon 14-24mm 2.8 and generally was extremely impressed with this lens. On the market, it is now costing about 1800$.

At first it seems high, but think about it. Leica Tri Elmar is now about 6000$, plus one would have to buy viewfinder for it....say 500$. Similarly should one buy say 3 primes with viewfinder, it makes the Nikkor dirty cheap.

We all know wide angle lens (24mm to 35mm) performs better with rangefinder, but how about ultra-wide? Is rangefinder still better? Does anyone know?

i ordered $170 worth of camera grips from cameraleather.com on september 7th and have yet to receive anything. i've emailed morgan sparks on sept 24th about them and was told that they need some time to cut. however, it's more than 10 weeks and i've nt received anything. i've emailed morgan 3 times in the last month but have received no answers. is he on an extended holiday or have i been scammed? i've bought 2 covers from him previously and was very satisfied with the customer service. however, this sucks.

i have no idea what to do now.. :(

I am so damned puzzled by this decision. Here are my choices: A Mamiya 7 with 80mm for $950 CAN or a GSW690 for $800 CAN once I have imported into Canada. The Fuji is from KEH, in bargain condition, the Mamiya is in slightly ruff condtion (viewfinder cup missing with many miles on it). I am really looking for a wide-angle street photography camera and wondering which will work best. My thoughts are the Fuji, though cheaper won't hold its value as well. It does have the wide angle to start with, which is good, but is also quite large from what I understand. The Mamiya I hear is a much better camera, smaller and with a meter, but it comes with a lens focal length Im not super into because I use a Rollei TLR for that range.

Any ideas? My biggest issues are that Mamiyas are usually ruled out for being so much more expensive, but in this case it isn't so I am wondering if I should just go for what is considered the better camera?

G1 with Nokton 50/1.1: not bad at all

I got the GF1 when it came out and decided to replace my DSLR rig with m4/3. No regrets at all. But when it came time to buy the accessory EVF, I figured, for that much money, why not just get a used G1 body?

So that's what I did. I've had it for a couple of days and am surprised to find what lens I'm enjoying the most on it so far:

For the most part, I haven't been terribly impressed with M lenses on m4/3--I've rather favored the Pen F lenses for manual focus work. But the Nokton feels very well balanced on the G1 (it's a bit much on the GF1) and I have been finding it extremely easy to focus precisely using the EVF, even at f/1.1, even without using magnified view. Unlike M wides, which have disappointed me somewhat, this lens renders very nicely on the G1...I think it actually handles better than on the R-D1 (though not, perhaps, than it does on the M7, where it usually lives).

Here are a few pics from today, all at 1.1, just to see if I could do it.

(The softness here isn't just the lens--it's mostly from the two layers of thick bus stop glass I was shooting through!)

Today I got my early (and hopefully not premature!) graduation present to myself, a Canon 7s, 100mm f/2, and 50mm f/1.2 along with a few other odds...

Today I got my early (and hopefully not premature!) graduation present to myself, a Canon 7s, 100mm f/2, and 50mm f/1.2 along with a few other odds and ends. Both of the lenses seem to have issues, but I got a decent deal on the package so I think I'd rather try and keep/repair them than send them back.

The 100mm is in beautiful shape, but RF patch does not align at infinity. Looking closely it may have been the victim of an unskilled repair-person: one of the three larger screws towards the rear of the barrel is phillips head, unlike the other two. I suppose another person's screw-up is a can of worms, but assuming they didn't mangle or lose anything, how feasible would it be to attempt the repair on my own?

The 50mm I may just send out, it has a pretty sticky aperture ring, light fungus on one of the internal elements (behind the aperture blades), and a bent front filter ring. I like a challenge, but it seems like the rear retaining ring doesn't want to budge, and I don't want to force the issue with my somewhat oversized spanner. I actually do have the tool to repair the filter ring too, but given that the front element bulges out I don't want to risk trying it on my own. I'd also like to get rid of the infinity lock, I'm guessing that's a fairly easy/standard modification?

Also, is there any trick to getting the cap off of the rangefinder alignment screw on the 7s? I bent a paperclip to use as a mini-spanner but it turned out to be too thick. I did a staple instead, but the darn thing still doesn't want to budge.

So I've ordered Rodinal and am going to give it a try next time I develop a roll. I've just loaded up a roll of Arista Premium 400 (like Tri-X 400) in my camera today and want to know how to set the EI...

When developing in Diafine, it can vary (though the sweet spot seems to be about 1250). One of the reasons I want to use Rodinal is that the film can be closer to what it's actually rated for.

So... Should I set it to 400? I've read that 200-250 can work well too... what's been your experience?

Also, what method and dilution do you use for developing? 1:50 with gentle agitation? About 12-14 minutes? Is that right?

This relative film-newbie would love to hear what you're doing... feel free to post examples too!

Hello,

I'm curious as to how many of you use cotton gloves when loading film reels, either in or out of a changing bag. I use a changing bag and dislike wearing them, but also dislike it when my hands get sticky during a particularly difficult film load. I now just wear one on my right hand that holds the film, and not on my left hand that spins the metal reel. This seems to give me a better feel when starting the film on the reel, but lessens the amount I actually touch the film with my bare hands. Thoughts?

Thanks.

I just recently acquired a Canon 85/1.9 from the classifieds. The focus was stiff so I lubed it up and got it working better, aperture ring was stiff so I cleaned out the rust and lubed that as well. Anyways, I've shot maybe 3 pictures on it, grabbed it from my bag today to see this

I never did anything with the elements, I'm guessing it happened when I tossed the lens into my padded bag or something. There were flakes in the lens from the aperture blades when I first got it (looked like paint chips) but the blades were (and still are) intact.

Anyways, I sent an email to DAG for a quote but was wondering if there was somewhere else to send it (ie faster and/or cheaper). I've never dealt with Youxin Ye, and I'm not sure if he does lenses. In short, the optics are perfect, the focus is usable, but these damned aperture blades are messed up and I'd rather not pay as much for the repair as I did for the lens in the first place.

I thought about trying to fix it myself, but figured if I messed up the lens would be shot (or be stuck with a 1.9 aperture).

So I just had my first battle getting film onto a plastic reel. This will be my 3rd time developing and the first two times I had no problem getting the film onto the reel, but this time, WOAH, what a hassle.

I nearly panicked. I couldn't tell if there was something wrong with one of the sprocket holes on the film, if something was wrong with the reel itself, or if I was just being clumsy and stupid (likely). It would load to a point, seem to get stuck and then it would UNLOAD (go backwards).

WTF?

Thinking it might been the reel, I went into my husband's studio, which is nearly pitch black dark, and using only the arm hole swapped the reel for another.

In the process, I realized I still had my glow-in-the-dark watch on. LOL

So, I may have ruined the film anyway, but I did manage to finally get it on. Don't know why... I struggled for nearly 40 minutes and have no idea what the problem was.

Wish me luck... going to go develop it now.
