last batch of film was much more dirty than usual.
Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of the small speckle of dust or more something like impurities are stuck in the emulsion, and I would like to know what I'm doing wrong here. One idea: Sometimes, I let the films in standing water for some time to "rinse them by diffusion". I tend to do this with inverted Osmosis water, but one of the last batches stayed a few hours in tap water. Could this be the problem?

I've noticed a lot of defects on my last batch of negatives, some of which appear as black spots on the image, which means that it's not something (dust) added to the neg, but rather the image actually missing there. the worst case can be seen here:

For a darkroom I am constructing, I need to lightproof some commercial aluminum windows that are 5x8 feet (w x h). By commercial, I mean double-pane glass in box aluminum frames. They butt into a corner, one panel on the left, two on the right. 8" cement sill below, little cement lip above (and then several feet of wall to the ceiling).

The goal here is to allow the windows to let in light on demand but be lightproof when needed. Lab-grade blinds are about $2K. Lab-grade blackout curtains are about a grand. A huge quantity of black foamcore is not very much money but might present some engineering issues with opening. Ikea makes some fairly inexepensive blackout roller blinds that don't have side pockets (and may or may not really be opaque) - but may be a good raw material source.

What's your best shot? This is in a climate where the glass and frames will be quite cold a couple months a year.

Thanks!

Hi there!

I have been watching videos and pictures made with Kodachrome 64.. what a beauty, sadly it's not possible to produce it anymore :(

And I'm wondering if the Velvia 50 is in some terms close in contrast and colours to this film.. I love much more the slide than negatives and I will do a very long trip for south Asia or Caribe, We don't know still.. with my leica M6 with 35 cron (don't know yet if asph or IV, which is better for colour?), and the FM2 with the 105 2.5 ..

Any suggestion in colour film?

Hello,

Long story short, the rewind button on my camera jammed, I heard film tear, I sat in a cupboard and pulled said film out and wrapped it in a bin bag, and now it's tucked away in the corner of a dark drawer in my dark attic...

However since I don't develop my own film I don't know what to do with it - I'd quite like to get it developed as I used it whilst visiting some friends and the memories are precious ones, but I know that a Boots or similar place wouldn't have a clue what to do with it. Is there anywhere (in the UK) that would be able to deal with such a thing, or am I going to have to wait until I find someone who develops at home (or start myself, which I do plan to do at some stage..)?

Hope I have posted this in the right place (have already moved it once as accidentally posted in a sub-forum!)

Thanks,
Rob

i hope i don't start a war here...

i was out this morning, shooting with both the xp1 and the xe1...and it was just so damned enjoyable.
for me, as an amateur photographer, this is really what it's all about...the experience, not a paycheck or accolades...just for a joy filled morning of feeling good!

sure, i would love to come home with award winning shots, but so far that hasn't happened...but i did come home with a smile on my face.
my kit fits completely into my bag, is easy to extract and put back in...if i want to carry less, there are smaller or no bags...whatever!

bottom line...sure, it can be about the 'gear' but more so, it's about why we do it and how we feel about doing it!

Hi all,

I've been toying with the idea of shooting IR film and have some laying around (a roll of Kodak HIE I inherited, some Ilford SFX [I know it isn't real IR], and one or two other generic IR films intended for traffic cameras), and so I grabbed up 2 generic IR720 filters off eBay without thinking about it. I'm closer to having an excuse to try shooting some IR, but now I've got a couple of questions I can't seem to Google a straight answer to.

Why can I see through the IR720 filter I have in 52mm, but not the one in 40.5mm? I thought they should have the same opacity, but they don't.

Was IR720 the right way to go, or should I have picked higher wavelengths?

How can I know if my lenses have a hotspot?

Also, what is a hotspot, really? I had never heard of the term until I was dearching for answers a few minutes ago.

Do IR films all have the same ISO sensitivity or no? Is there a chart or something that would explain it?

Any and all suggestions would be great! IR is a very cool but very intimidating-seeming type of photography, but I really want to try it.

My first serious camera, shared with my brother, was a Retina II. We used it to document trips and friends in high school, then it was sold.

I got another one lately, more than 40 years later (do we all seek the cameras of our youth?). It is a special feeling to shoot again with a camera that I met as a young teenager.

IMHO the Retina II has one of the best combinations of portability, lens quality, rangefinder and easy handling in the Retina series - at least for the subjects I like to shoot.

It took a lot of work to find and patch a bellows leak, but it was done. Some from the first successful test roll (TMX, Beutler):
