I'm interested in purchasing a Flash for my M9 (M is coming), I've read that the Leica SF-58 isn't very user friendly and I was wondering what other brands people are using, and also what trigger brands they are using that are compatible to use with off camera flash.

Thanks in advance. :)

i hope i don't start a war here...

i was out this morning, shooting with both the xp1 and the xe1...and it was just so damned enjoyable.
for me, as an amateur photographer, this is really what it's all about...the experience, not a paycheck or accolades...just for a joy filled morning of feeling good!

sure, i would love to come home with award winning shots, but so far that hasn't happened...but i did come home with a smile on my face.
my kit fits completely into my bag, is easy to extract and put back in...if i want to carry less, there are smaller or no bags...whatever!

bottom line...sure, it can be about the 'gear' but more so, it's about why we do it and how we feel about doing it!

Hi all,

I've been toying with the idea of shooting IR film and have some laying around (a roll of Kodak HIE I inherited, some Ilford SFX [I know it isn't real IR], and one or two other generic IR films intended for traffic cameras), and so I grabbed up 2 generic IR720 filters off eBay without thinking about it. I'm closer to having an excuse to try shooting some IR, but now I've got a couple of questions I can't seem to Google a straight answer to.

Why can I see through the IR720 filter I have in 52mm, but not the one in 40.5mm? I thought they should have the same opacity, but they don't.

Was IR720 the right way to go, or should I have picked higher wavelengths?

How can I know if my lenses have a hotspot?

Also, what is a hotspot, really? I had never heard of the term until I was dearching for answers a few minutes ago.

Do IR films all have the same ISO sensitivity or no? Is there a chart or something that would explain it?

Any and all suggestions would be great! IR is a very cool but very intimidating-seeming type of photography, but I really want to try it.

My first serious camera, shared with my brother, was a Retina II. We used it to document trips and friends in high school, then it was sold.

I got another one lately, more than 40 years later (do we all seek the cameras of our youth?). It is a special feeling to shoot again with a camera that I met as a young teenager.

IMHO the Retina II has one of the best combinations of portability, lens quality, rangefinder and easy handling in the Retina series - at least for the subjects I like to shoot.

It took a lot of work to find and patch a bellows leak, but it was done. Some from the first successful test roll (TMX, Beutler):
My girlfriend and I had an absolutely amazing time. Best vacation we've ever had -- by far.

A few people asked me to share some photos from my trip, so here you go...

All of the below were either taken with my om-d or my rx100. I also brought along my leicaflex sl2 with 50mm summicron, but have not had a chance to develop the film yet. Hopefully, I will end up with some film keepers too. :)
What did I buy at a thrift store this afternoon?

Small German viewfinder folder, Schnieder Krueznach Radionar 1:2,9/75, Prontor II shutter. Sticker inside says "Made in Germany USA Zone". Manufacturer's mark is a stylized trefoil with the letters "A G C". Any ideas?

Aside from the peeling leather and sticky slow shutter speeds, it looks to be in pretty decent condition, but I could use some help identifying it.

ETA I found the initials "FW" on a small steel plate beneath the lens. Franka Werk?

Do you usually change lenses when shooting a roll with your FSU?

The reason I ask is because I would like to shoot with a Jupiter 12, I think 35mm would be better for me. However, as I will need to add and remove the turret viewfinder all the time because it won't fit in the case, I'm afraid I might just stick to the Jupiter 8. Hence I'd like to know if some of you still carry both (or other lenses) and change during a roll (and if there are no risks in doing so).

Cheers,

This morning while looking for an old "Bill Pierce" article in "The Digital Journalist" I needed to use their search engine to locate "Bill's stuff". Well, in finding the archive, I just began reading, I suggest you have a look!

This one was great. Here's the opening sentence: "The first time I shot a Broadway show's photo call, someone from the publicist's office said, "I don't know who the photographer is, but I think the assistant is W. Eugene Smith."
http://digitaljournalist.org/issue09...and-bolts.html

Here's the archive link:
http://digitaljournalist.org/archives.html

If it doesn't take you directly to "Bill's stuff", Just type "bill pierce" into the search box at the upper right of the page.

Thanks for some great stories and tips Bill.
