MS Optical 35/3.5 Perar Triplet For M4/3?

jonmanjiro has been discussing, and is now selling, a very interesting hand-assembled, limited-production MS Optical 35/3.5 Perar Triplet lens in Leica M-mount. Here's the thread; you'll find the For Sale ad in the classifieds:

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/foru...ad.php?t=94672

MS Optical is Miyazaki-san in Chiba, Japan. He designs and hand-assembles lenses, and does lensmount conversions as well. The 35/3.5 Perar has a limited production of about 185 units.

I'm tugging coats here because it looks like a great walkaround short tele lens for m4/3. Very small, collapsible, with a focusing lever that should make focusing quicker/easier than, say, an LTM 35/3.5 Summaron, modern glass and coatings, and a cool/quirky backstory. Looks like it would make a great pocketable combo with a GF1 or EPx.

It's not in my budget at the moment, but it looks like at least a couple of RFFers have ordered one, and I figured not everyone here is haunting the Leica M forum.

I have no financial interest in the product or sellers, just have a lust for oddball optics and an unhealthy obsession with things Leica- and Japan-related.

Miyazaki-san also has an interesting 50/1.3.....

I recently made the mistake and shot almost an entire roll of color negative film with a RED 25 filter, which, as I know now, is really only most useful when shooting black and white film.

However, after discovering all those red images in my scans, I tried out a few things to save the pictures. I eventually found a nice way to convert them to black and white, which worked quite well for a lot of the images.

I used "The GIMP" for Ubuntu Linux, although the same is possible with Photoshop. However I found that GIMP did somehow a better job.

This is what I did:
- Open the image
- Color -> Components -> Decompose... (default settings are OK)

A new image will be created at this point, which is a black and white version, but doesn't look that great yet. But the following steps turned out to work wonders:
- Duplicate the red layer
- Drag the duplicated layer to the bottom of all layers
- Change the "Mode" of the top red layer to "Overlay"

This usually already looks really good. If not, tweaking the opacity of the red/green/blue layers a bit can improve the image further.

I thought this was a neat way to save those mistakingly made red images, and thought I would share it here.

Here the original of the Madrid image:

Here the results, click on an image to see a larger version. All were shot with my Yashica Electro 35 GSN on Kodak Ektar 100 film, scanned by Dwayne's (Noritsu scanner):

I just bought a Minolta Autocord on eBay UK; have a look here:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...1#ht_500wt_928

Now, I received an email from the seller, stating:
"I was having a quick check over the camera this morning when I came to realise that the focusing lever is stiff and doesn't actually move. Is this a major problem for you? I am sorry I didn't post this in the description however I only found out about it today. Thanks"

I'm not sure he's telling the thruth: we emailed before about a BIN price, and he hoped for more (GBP 180) then he got (GBP 112).

Is the problem he's talking about serious ? Would it be easy to repair ? I might try to get a partial refund.

Thanks for your help,

Hi, I have been looking at rangefinderforum and reading everything possible for several months but only just finally got my registration sorted out. ...

Hi, I have been looking at rangefinderforum and reading everything possible for several months but only just finally got my registration sorted out. It was weird! I went to art school (poverty ensues!) and majored in drawing and painting after being told I couldn't major in photography and film as well. But I've always loved photography and film. my mom worked in photography eons ago and even had a darkroom in the 70's...but the chemicals made her sick and she gave it up. She has an amazing eye and takes the most stunning photos with any old camera. So photography and framing images in ones mind was always around.
I got interested in rangefinder photography this year after accidently looking at the Leica website for too long. 35 is not too old to learn new tricks is it? Back in art school I learned about rangefinder photography but it was dismissed as obsolete rubbish and we worked with slr cameras instead.
So Leica was always a mysterious thing. I reluctantly got a digital camera in 2003 after a then boyfriend insisted digital was the future and he was a "professional" photographer and everyone he knew was throwing their film cameras into the ocean blah blah blah.
I was never very happy with digital but did take amazing shots with my nikon digital thing. It cost a fortune for me and is now worth nothing. It had the dreaded image processing problem, some lcd screen problem and some other problems which nikon fixed but the camera has not performed very well ever since it's visit at Nikon and has new issues so is so bad I want to throw it into every ravine, the ocean, off cliffs, at every deer or bear i try to take a photo of. Plus my husband had two catastrophic pc computer crashes in the 5 years I have known him and lost all his photos. Some years ago even I was sitting down to back up my photos & put them onto discs when something very very bad happened and I lost four years of images.
So I wanted to go back to film for all the usual reasons, but wanted to try something new. No way I can afford a Leica M. I love well made german engineering but from experience I also know what it costs to repair well made german things. I looked at the voigtlanders and I fell in love with the olive bess R2 and had to have it. But everybody else wants olive bessas so that wasn't going well. I thought i would try a bessa T. I didn't think about having to get external viewfinders for every lens, but did get a leica multiviewfinder. The bessa t has been a disaster for many whiny and some legitimate reasons. I found I enjoyed looking into the rangefinder and all that but having to go back and forth between the viewfinder and the rangefinder resulted in lots of abstract art and frustration. It is maybe not the best camera for newbies like me-unless there is something wrong with the camera or lens. I have my eyes locked onto another olive R2 for sale. Would you recommend an R2 as a good camera for someone starting out, has glasses, little money, or what about another voigltander bessa? Also what would a good affordable lens be to start with? I have an old elimarit 90mm f4 that is pretty and I do like the framing but I need something wider for general purposes. I found f4 too limiting.
Wow, this is long!
I'm in the bush near Vancouver Canada
Thanks, Heather

After having used the 35/1.2 Nokton for a while, I realize that I can live with/like the 35mm FoV. Now, I am looking for a compact 35mm f/2 lens for use on a M body. My choices are narrowed down to the following:

* UC Hexanon 35/2 - I don't have a screwmount camera, but this looks like a good lens to have. Is the L-Hexanon similar in performance? I know that the optical formula is different. Also, could anyone post wide-open and f/4 shots on B&W film with this lens? How is the contrast ? I have seen samples on flickr and other threads here, I just want shots which I might have missed. :)
* Canon 35/2 LTM - I know this is reaching cult status. I like the performance of the Canon RF lenses (I used to have a 50/1.5) and look with B&W. Once again, any samples on B&W film with this lens are welcome.
* Summicron pre-ASPH ver 4 /3/2? - No samples needed from this one. And there are numerous review on the net. I would really like to try this one, but ebay prices seem ridiculous. PS: I really love the rectangular hood. :p

Any other lens I might have missed, and should consider? My primary use will be on the M body, and B&W film (PlusX, APX400). I like my negatives to be relatively lower contrast (Yes, I do have additional control in the development process) when compared to negatives from modern ASPH lenses.

I have a GF1 on order. I will want to buy a couple of MFT ( micro 4/3's) adapters;
one for Leica M mount lenses and another for Nikon SLR lenses.

There are, of course, Voigtlander and similarly priced adapters priced from
$175 and up. There are also much less expensive ones in the $20 to $75
range which some users have either praised or condemned. I am quite sure than the Voigtlander brand is probably high quality and a no-brainer, but has anyone had experience with the less expensive ones available at Amazon, Adorama, or even Ebay?

I'll spend the money if I have to, but if I can get a usable product that may not look as "pretty" for less money, I'd rather do that.

Comments, anyone?
