Hello,

I am looking to purchase a Saab 9-2X Aero in the next few months, but first was wondering what you current Saab owners' feelings were concerning availability of parts as Saab has closed down.

What are your plans moving forward?

Do you have confidence that parts will be available if I purchase a Saab, or would it be foolish to do so?

I live in MA and there are many Saabs around here, and thus many Saab repair specialists so at least I have that going for me...

Thanks.

I cleaned the port on both the female and male with compressed air. I also tired it with my Bronica SQ-AM, which I am trying to sell. It works fine with both lenses and all shutter speeds.
I don't really want to bring it in to be serviced because I am guessing it will cost a lot. So any suggestions?

This very old footage of London has been going around in the past few days, with everyone seem astonished and excited to see how London was some years ago.
Made me think how London on the one hand is chasing film makers (and photographers) as terrorists, on the other celebrates these marvels of the past. I'm sure a lot of people would not want to be filmed or be suspicious of the filmmaker.

GW photographed a boxer named Nick Biondi at length for Sports Illustrated in the mid 1950s.

This link contains a lengthy contemporary interview with Bondi.

http://blog.sfmoma.org/2013/05/the-boxer/

I think this piece gives an interesting perspective on GW as a person and on his skills as a documentary photographer early in his career.

One take home message for me was that technical skill and the ability to work well and fast is important for documentary photography. The other is that large, loud cameras with large lenses would be a severe handicap to achieve what GW did during this project.

Here is one quote from Bondi.

"Biondi: One of the things that still amazes me about the encounter was that neither I nor any of the other participants in the photographs were even remotely self-conscious. Normally when there’s a guy with a camera focusing his attention on you, a person might become self-conscious. Self-consciousness didn’t exist for me then, and looking at the photographs it doesn’t show itself in the pictures. I wasn’t aware of Garry the Photographer’s presence. He was like a ghost, and we simply went about our daily tasks. It helped enormously that he didn’t use flash, but it also made us wonder if he actually had film in the camera! In my opinion this ghostliness was a major component of his talent."

What should be my expectations for trading my summicron?

I'll be going to a camera expo this weekend, so I got to thinking..

I have a rigid 50mm summicron with a bit of front haze. It bothers me a bit so I'm thinking of trading it out for another summicron with clean glass

To get my haze removed and recoated would cost almost $300 with shipping and everything said and done. My thoughts are if I can get a clean lens for less than that extra 300 why not?

For trade I have:

the 50 rigid summicron
Orange and green genuine leica filters in case
genuine leica lens hood

I could trade these all together as a bundle to help offset the devalue of the haze. Would this be enough to negotiate a fair trade for some clean glass? Or would some extra cash have to be thrown in on my end in most cases. I would probably throw another $200 tops on top. Anything more and I may as well keep my cron accessories and send the lens out for recoating.

It would be nice to upgrade to the DR summicron (thinking without goggles? Would be going on an M2. Not sure if goggles are needed or not) or V3

Just trying to feel out the summicron market a bit. Any help is appreciated!

From time to time I have had to deal with stuck filters/step-up-rings and it isn’t fun. I have read about ways to un-stick them from using ice cubes to blow torches and trying to release one can be daunting. So I thought I would try to find something that might prevent them from sticking in the first case. I needed something that would not be oily, not migrate and repel dirt. I went to Ace Hardware and bought a 4 oz bottle of DuPont Teflon Non-Stick Dry-Film Lubricant (Part #DNS040101/DNS104101) for $5 and have been testing it for the last month. I use it sparingly and have found that it seems to work. I haven’t had any real issues with any stuck filters or step-up-rings. I’ve had one that was slightly hard to unscrew but only needed moderate effort to undo. As a bonus I have found that several of my “less expensive” step-up-rings that used to feel gritty now go on as smooth as silk.

On the basis that we all spread the news about bad experiences, here's a good one:

My M6 had some banding at 1/1000th and a slightly off exposure counter (no big deal but annoying).

Red Dot Cameras on Old Street (London) took the camera back and not only fixed the issues, but gave it a full service. It has come back feeling beautiful.

No charge, and no excessive waiting (it took a couple of weeks).

So - if you need any work doing, or if you want to buy a second hand Leica from somebody you can trust, they should be on your list of go to guys.

That is all :)

There's been a fair amount of chatter here about using digital cameras to scan negatives and how they are better/worse than the alternatives. Since I've been using all three of these of these devices for scanning film, I thought I'd post a comparison showing the resulting differences in output. I am using these items mostly on their default settings. My perspective being that I really just want things to work as they come. I don't have the time to buy different software or do tons of post-processing.

This test shot was taken with an OM1 and 35-70 3.5-4.5 zoom at close focus. Film is Arista Premium 400 exposed at 400 and developed in Caffenol CH. It was a thin negative, but all scanning methods could handle it. Maybe not the sharpest film/lens setup in the world, but hey, this is just round 1. More examples will follow :D

Here is a crop from the V500, scanned at 4800 dpi. No Epson Scan sharpening and minimal if any sharpening applied:

Here is a crop from the full negative, taken with the Panasonic G3, and OM 50mm 3.5 macro:

Finally, for fun, here is one taken with the Panasonic G3 and OM macro at 1:1 reproduction:

It's no surprise the 1:1 macro shot is doing the best, sharp and at such a magnification that there's not much digital noise interfering with the grain. Of course, when you do the math, at 1:1 the 4/3 Panasonic G3 sensor is magnifying at something around 6000+ dpi if my math is correct (someone will probably correct me on this ) Downside is that one would need to take 4 good, level shots and stitch them together to cover a full 35 mm neg. Only worth it for the real keepers and requires a decent piece of software to do the mosaicking.

Next best seems to be the G3 shot taken of the entire negative. After cropping the top and bottom, it works out to 13mp. This is how I tend to use my camera for scanning negatives. While it's not lacking much detail from the 1:1 shot, I do see what looks like digital noise interfering with the grain, and it isn't very pretty. This leads me to conclude that even for grainy 400 speed film, 13 mp is inadequate for properly recording all the detail and grain of a 35 mm frame. But in terms of printing, it would have to be a large one to notice this.

Finally, in third, is the V500 scan, which I honestly thought did a surprisingly good job compared to my past experience with this scanner. Maybe it likes this film more than others, we'll see. Still present, however, is the dreaded V500 grain-obliterating "smear" that can only be corrected to a point by sharpening and/or image size reduction.

The Coolscan 5000 comparison is coming...

Larger images of the ones above can be seen on my Flickr set

Next up - color slide film
