In light of Thomas Sowell’s article about his local lab’s no longer processing E-6 Films, and with the loss of Kodachrome, will we see fewer labs processing E-6 and a move to the C-41 color films? The move to Digital is likely the main cause for lower interest in color film. Locally,it’s been an environmental issue with the labs. What about B+W Film? I think, with the ability to easily process B+W film at home and the easy access to the simple chemistry needed, we will have B+W film around for a long time. I guess I should add that, there is still a preference for Silver Gelatin Prints (B+W) among many Museums, Galleries and collectors. Where is this all going? Help define the migration from film (and color positive in particular) to digital and what will film lovers have as options in the next years.

I just got a Konica S2 today. It seems like a nice camera, needs agood cleaning, for sure.

I put a new battery in to check the meter, battery check reads OK, but no activity from the meter at all. There is no obvious signs of corrosion in the battery chamber, or any of the wires visible when the bottom is off. Also, no broken or corroded wires when I peeked behind the light meter.

Where are the most likely places to look when troubleshooting the light meter on this camera?

Or should I invest in a handheld meter, forgo the auto feature altogether, and be happy with what I've got?

Hello all,

I'm new to the classic rangefinder club and just enjoying building my own little collection at the moment.

I just bought a dirt cheap Canonet QL17 (not the GIII) as it had a stuck focus ring. Aside from that the camera is basically in mint condition. I managed to get the focus ring working with a bit of fiddling and liberal use of lighter fluid.

What I have discovered now is that even though the focussing ring moves smoothly, the lens casing moves in and out and the parallax correction is working the two images in the viewfinder are not moving together ie I cannot focus. It seems the focus is stuck on infinity and doesn't move. I noticed also that when the focussing ring was stuck it was set to infinity.

Any help would be grand.

Cheers.

Question for those of you who use the *specific* combination of VueScan Pro (latest version) with a Plustek 7600i:

Is Vuescan's multi-exposure...

Question for those of you who use the *specific* combination of VueScan Pro (latest version) with a Plustek 7600i:

Is Vuescan's multi-exposure setting (NOT the multi pass setting) working correctly for you?

On my Macintosh (Mac Pro), it's definitely not working. It *looks* like it's working. That is, the first pass (which I watch in Vuescan) is at the 'normal' exposure, and the second pass uses a much longer exposure (as expected). The problem is, when Vuescan merges the two exposures, I end up with a TIFF file that's *exactly* the same as a single-exposure file. You can even overlay their histograms -- they're identical. It's like Vuescan is simply throwing away the second exposure, rather than merging the two.

This is a big problem with the Plustek 7600i since its D-max is so low. When scanning full-range B&W negatives, I get severely blown highlights. I can *manually* make two separate exposures and combine them in Photomatix, but that's a huge hassle -- that's what the Multi Exposure option is supposed to do.

I've been using VueScan for 9 years, and a zillion film/slide/flatbed scanners before this. First time I've seen this problem. Haven't heard anything from Ed... so I thought I'd find out if anyone with this combination has had any luck?

Note: I just 'upgraded' from a V600, which rendered gorgeous tonality from the entire B&W negative -- but was too "soft." So far, scans from the 7600i are much 'sharper' (at least on a grain level), but fail miserably in the highlights (dark areas on a negative)...

I wonder if the rangefinder forum, especially for the digital folks, isn’t turning into the cameras smaller than a big DSLR forum. What I liked about my film Leicas was the relatively small size and the brightline finder. These days I put accessory bright line finders on small digitals like the G10 and do the same thing to DSLR’s when I need to shoot at high ISO’s. I just don’t find myself using my digital M much. I wonder if other rangefinder folks are picking up on the small digitals as street cameras or the kind of cameras that you always have with you or I’m just part of some lunatic fringe. Your thoughts?

New to RF. Got 2 months ago my first Leica a M6 TTL with a 'cron 35/2 that I'm really enjoying.

Yesterday I received (bought from the auction site) a tele-elmar 135/f4 (from 1970 but in E+ shape) on my M6 TTL but the focus patch is not changing when I'm turning the focus ring on the lens. I unmounted/mounted several times the lens to be sure that I was doing it correctly, tried different apertures, etc. but no luck.

For me, it seems as if the kens is not "able to communicate" the focus change to the camera. As it seems that the lens as almost not been used at all (as really like new), I imagine that some CLA would need to done on the lens to lubrificate the "mechanical part signaling" the focus change to the camera. Or is it due to a simple incompatibility between the lens and my M6 TTL?

The owner told me that the lens was working fine on a M5; and I do not know anybody around me with a Leica (otherwise I will have been able to try it on another body).

I am just looking for some feedback here to know if it is a common case or not, or if it could be a serious issue with the lens, etc.
I am certainly going to return the lens, but as the lens is in such good condition (outside, glass, baldes, etc.) that I am willing to keep it and sending it for a CLA, but I do not know if a CLA could fix that or not.

Thanks by advance for any help/advice.

For anyone interested in how to repair the Hexar AF:

The Hexar AF is my favorite camera ever so I was frustrated when I experienced the (in)famous problem with erratic shutter release/focus. Sometimes it worked fine, sometimes it worked only 30-50% of the time, the inreliability making it an unusable camera for me.

I tried the fix described on Silvergrain more than once. First time, it solved the problem... for a while. When the problem came back again, the fix only improved the situation a little. Something else had to be done.

I searched around and saw a lot of talk about scarcity of parts. I couldn't find a clear answer to the question "can someone provide a REAL fix for the problem?" (not just cleaning the contacts). I then stumbled upon the camera parts & repair service that Dirk Rösler/Japan Exposures provides. Basically, you send the camera to him (he's in Japan), and he takes cares of the rest. I saw the Hexar RF among the examples of recently repaired equipment, so I sent an email and he replied that they still repair the AF in Japan. ("They" being Kenko, these days, but according to this post it's the same repair shop as before, just different owners.)

I sent the camera to Dirk, who was very communicative through the whole process, and after almost exactly a month I had the camera in my hand again. Pretty good for shipping back and forth to Japan (and within Japan)!

The repair ended up costing ¥21.000 - more than Dirk expected (he hadn't had anyone send in a Hexar AF for this problem before), but apart from replacing the shutter button switch they also did "AF focus adjustment and external cleaning". The LCD wasn't perfect before, but it looks good now, and it feels like the viewfinder is clearer. So ¥21.000 + ¥5000 for Dirk's handling fees + ¥3000 for shipping back to Sweden - that's about $340-350 USD. Definitely worth it to me - my favorite camera functions perfectly again!
