I shoot a good few frames then the camera does not fire, as it needs just a little bit of a second pull on the lever - is this normal or a symptom of a stretched belt ?

I'm also a little bit suspicious of a prior repair job on the winder:
When I first unpacked it, the leicavit would not mount closed until I undid the screw and turned the inner body lock disk through 180 degrees.
Either the seller or the last owner had not mounted it on a camera before shipping it.

Having wanted to try a Leicavit for a long time, I picked up a 14461 at a good price, but I'm not sure if it's all okay.

No, it's not normal. One quick jerk shuild be enough.

I think someone tampered your Leicavit. It is a very complicated mechanism, so send it to a really good technician.

Erik.

Other alternative would be the Abrahamsson Rapidwinder. Costs less than a Leicavit, and is a much simpler design than a Leicavit--means there is less to go wrong, less chance of a breakdown in use...

Thanks - I've decided just to return the Leicavit to the retailer.
I will consider one of TomA's or a motor in the future.

I have one, it's just a normal Leicavit with extra engraving. Think twice about returning it. I had two of Tom A's Rapidwinders but sold them and bought the Leicavits which I prefer.
