Sports photography with an M6 -- absolutely!

I guess I'd first have to be convinced that bowling is actually a sport, rather than a game.:D
Nice shots, though.

Nice shots; I think the the AP should see this.

LOL, my first reaction too :) But hey, if it counts for you it counts.
Still one of my favourite sports photographs is by Winogrand, probably with the M4 + Canon 28/2.8 he shot 99% of his work with:

You can do anything with a Leica and a 28

Well, it's a little like Ken Rockwell saying a Leica IIIF is pretty much good only for landscapes. I've used them for years to shoot live concert stuff. I wish someone had told me I was not supposed to do that...

I like the 2nd shot, Keith.
And for the record, if Golf is considered a sport, I believe Bowling should be allowed. In Bowling, only the concessioner drives around in an electric cart. Not the participants.

He needs to watch his horizons. ;) And I fully agree with "... Leica and a 28."
Yeah, and you can always fall back on chess, checkers and table football competitions. But I'd love to have a press card and show up at a Barça-Real Madrid match with my M7 and Visoflex .

I've always considered baseball to be a leisure activity rather than a sport. Too many over-weight guys sitting around chewing tobacco.

... baseball is considered a sport ?

braver, The Winogrand pic is wonderful but I'm not even convinced that that is a 'sport photograph' per se... It's a street photograph which happened to take place on a playing field.... :)

sports mean here some action shots so no need to quarrel :)
I once tried with my 90mm to shot horse show. You can get really decent shots.
In an environment where there is not enough light, and you dont want to use flash, you can not use autofocus (it is too slow, so you miss), especially if you are shooting fast moving things like horses. So an M6 or a canon 40d are the same at this situation.

I would agree with this. I like it as a photograph, in general. But as a sports shot...it's crap!

I believe that is a too harsh adjective to use.

i am not going to say that my photos are sport shoots, primarily because I do not care about classification, but I just started to create a challenging (for me) project of documenting the surf & kitesurf scene around santa cruz with my m6 and 2 prime lenses ('cron 35 and elmar 135). I may add soon a nikonos for water shots.
my on-going project can be viewed at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=32343&id=169585179730675
and yes i think that one (not putting myself in this category) could take good sports photos with film cameras, but it will be really challenging to do it for a living as a pro nowadays in a world of quasi real-time information. and for sure depending on the sport (and the real time result/need associated with it), it goes from doable to almost impossible. but also it depends if the final photo is going to be consumed as mostly information (real time needs; think espn, etc.) vs art vision of a sport.
I believe that is a too harsh adjective to use.
Indeed. I also don't get it, it's a photo about sports and definitely captures the frantic action of the game. It isn't a closeup of an important action, and it isn't a cliche image, so it does not look like every other sports photo.
Some people here are defining their genres too tightly, considering photography, but also sports. All sports are leisure activities at their core. You can say 'I love bowling but as a sports it's crap', but you should realize that that is only by your definition of 'sports'.

braver, I think there is a certain amount of tongue-in-cheek philosophising going on... That's why it's fun.

Vince, I love the second pic -- again it's a 'sport photo' that is the antithesis of a sport photo and therefore (to me at any rate) both enjoyable and slyly witty...
