View Full Version : Photos fom CV 21/4 Color-Skopar lens
Yet anoter CV lens that we dont seem to have a dedicated "Image" thread for. I think t's a superb lens - even more so, considering size and cost of it, giving a great performance. Post your pics from yours!
I'll get it started.
These are from RD1S using CV 21M:

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu192/krosya/CV%2021mm%20M%20lens/EPSN6416.jpg
I was about to say, this doesn't look very wide for a 21. But then I noticed you are using it with the RD1. I really enjoy my Pentax DA 21mm on the 1.5 crop-sensor dSLR. I'd like to see more shots from the 21mm with film as I've been considering a Cosina 20mm for SLR.
Great little lens. Its size is especially appealing to me. Almost seems to disappear when mounted.

It's a brilliant street lens for crowded places.
I am amazed at the great value of CV lenses. The only RF lenses I have ever bought new are the CV 40 and the CV 21. The CV 50f2.5 I bought used, and all my other RF lenses are vintage.

Great pictures, everyone!
I wonder oif CV is planning to make a faster 21mm or 24mm lens which could step in as a fast ~35mm EFOV lens for crop cameras like the R-D1 or the new Sony NEX3/5. F4 as fastest aperture is a little slow if such a lens has to step in for a 35mm FOV on a crop camera.

Great little lens! I'm waiting for its 15mm cousin to arrive in the mail and wonder if I will keep both, but in the mean time here are some favourites shot on film with my ZM:

I recently borrowed this little lens from a friend and I'm actually pretty amazed by it, build quality is superb and sharpness is really good even wide open.

That beijing shot is awesome.
Thanks guys. One of those serendipitous moments. Was having a late day coffee with friends on the 2nd floor of the Sanlitun mall. On the way to the restroom you have to cross an elevated foot bridge. Turned to my left and saw this immense shaft of light coming down the between the two buildings. This was my only shot. I might have preferred it in B&W, but Kodachrome was what I had in my M3 at the time.

Love this lens. By the way, it works great on the FSU cameras - it has so much depth of field that no shimming or other work-arounds required.

The beauty of this lens is that it has no distortion and doesn't pull the corners of the image. Therefore it doesn't have to "look" like a 21mm (which quickly becomes tiresome anyway) and it's just a useful lens for when you don't have enough space to use anything else, or you want to pull in some background.

There's no way that was taken with a 21mm. Unless it's a very small crop from the neg.

I like this lens--I need to use it more often. Here are some old ones (all film, of course):

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2671/4231907080_a6b071a302_z.jpg
Side question:
Does anybody ever have problems exposing for side-lit scenes, or otherwise unevenly lit, with this lens (it's the widest I own)?
I'm not sure if the lens has a tremendous amount of contrast (correct terminology?), or the problem is it covers a wider area, and hence, a wider range of possible light values in a given scene--especially if the scene is unevenly lit (I somewhat assume the latter to be the case).
However, I don't notice this issue with my 28. Doesn't happen all the time--but I'm in the habit of giving the 21 more light than the other lenses to compensate.
Anybody? Anything?

Thinking about getting a Bessa R4A just to make use of it's built-in 21mm viewfinder with this lens...
I thought the same thing once.
I've messed around with one. Let me say, it's much different from shooting with a viewfinder.
Simply, I find the viewfinder (I've got the Voigt plastic one) to be so much better: the view is bigger by an enormous margin, and the distortion is more true to the lens (presents a more accurate representation of the recorded product).
Hence, I feel like my money would be better spent on a dedicated wide body--ideally a Bessa T with a metal viewfinder.
Comes out cheaper, smaller package, and I would wager greater durability due to decreased complexity of the overall mechanism.
Alas, no Auto Exposure.
My two cents--to take or leave.

Hey Wil, thanks for the info!
I'm going to pop down to my local shop and have a play with one soon to see what the viewfinder experience really is like.
I have 2 21mm VFs, the VC plastic one and the 21/24/28 Leica, both do a great job of framing and the VC isn't really that big.
However the benefit to me would be the ability to focus closely with the RF, the parallax correction that therefore brings and the exposure meter/shutter speed info in the VF itself. The AE would be a bonus really.
I'm also interested in possibly getting the upcoming VC 21/1.8 Ultron, and close focusing, wide open would be the primary use-case for me, something i just don't think would be as easy on my M2 or M6.
I'll look into the Bessa T tho :)

Oh yea man, check it out for yourself--the R4A that I used belonged to a guy who used it exclusively with a 28, and he was fine with it.
If you're contemplating the new 21/1.8 (which looks positively dreamy, by the way), then close and accurate focus is surely an issue.
The whole thing is give and take. You may find that it works fine for you.
I suppose I was thinking about the 21/4 for the Bessa T--focus accuracy isn't a huge issue at f4.
Either way, I'm sure you'll fine something that works.
Oh i totally know what you mean with regards the 21/4 having a very deep DOF for most things i use it for, but i've found that at f4 you can get down to 0.7/0.5m which gives you some pleasant bokeh. However framing that closely is pure guesswork - fine on my M8, but not so easily checked on the M6.
DOF Master says that at 0.5m and f4, you're looking at a DOF of 13cm - by no means razor thin, but noticeable. At f1.8 it's 6cm.
I'm not sure how to go about working how off the parallax would be tho.
Aaaaanyways, numbers are just numbers - what matters are the photos and the real-world handing. I'll give the R4A a look in the shop and see if the exposure/shutter info and AE will make it worth having a dedicated wide body to pair up with my M8 or M6 rocking 35-50mm normals.
Thanks for the input sir!
I checked out the Voigtlander R4A today, mainly to see the 21mm built in viewfinder and I gotta say it was quite wonderful. Paired with the CV 21/4, and later, the 21/1.8, I can see how great a pairing that would be.
I'm looking that the Zeiss 28/2.8 or 25/2.8 Biogons ATM too, mainly for my M8, but both framelines are on the R4A too, increasing its usefulness.
I'll join in.

My combination of the Bessa R4A and the tiny 21mm f4 is a killer. Wearing glasses the viewfinder rocks and the total package has one of the best price/value/handling advantages.
Drawback: on High Street everyone expects a Leica......:D

I thought this came out alright.
This lens draws different from any other lens I have--I'm not sure what it is. Everything has a tendency to look kind of 'hyper-real'--something to do with the contrast. Not really sure how to articulate it.
Anyway, I still really like using it.

This is new Portra 400, and I've cropped it very slightly to tighten the composition. Representative FOV is probably about 23mm after the crop.
I think this shot was taken with the 21 F/4, but cropped to correct parallax:
http://mathieu.laparie.perso.neuf.fr/Documents%20divers/scan0288-Mods-2.jpg
I just bought this lens recently and I really love it already, more than the 35 F/1.4 I'd say, and I use it more often than the 50 F/1.1 (which I love too though). I also picked the 15 F/4.5 recently but hve not had the occasion to try it yet, so I guess the 21 F/4 is among my two favorites ones. :)

Shot this on FP4 developed in Rodinal, so grain is obvious. But, I'm happy with how this lens flares. The sun is behind the nearest bridge support. Almost gives a ghost/double look to the concrete work. Some might not like this but I do. Beats the blowout I'd get with lesser lenses.

In seriousness, they are whacking a pinata, which is a cardboard box stuffed with candy and little prizes. It's a Central American tradition, but quite popular in the US as well.
