I may have to shoot myself. I made my second real trip out with my 21/4 today. Had lots of fun, it is a great lens and I love the wide perspective. When the film comes back and I see if I produced results worthy of my high thoughts of the lens I will share more. There were just a few shots left on the roll when we stopped for lunch, and I decided to switch lenses to the 35 Ultron and to put the 21 away for for the day. Well I just went to organize my bag after the day of shooting, and, I LOST THE VIEWFINDER!!!! I am so STUPID.

Joe, if I do myself in over this you can have my Bessa, I know she will be loved as your second body.

Rover, check on ebay, I think a German seller puts CV finders for sale from time to time with BINs of $100 or so, the 21 may be among them. Also, the russian finder for the 20mm Russar may be another option.

Hey, and about shooting yourself, don't even think about it !

...

May I get your Hassy ? :D

PS: central-camera in Chicago has a close-out on Voigtlander accessories, some finders for $89. The 21 doesn't appear on their website, but maybe you could call them and ask...

I'm sorry to hear it - I know the feeling. I lost/left behind a new Pentax Optio 330 right after I bought it - $500 just gone. Oh man, did I kick myself! If it helps - I was dumber than you - I lost more money-wise.

Best Regards,

And you are so careful with everything. I put it away in its little sock and must have left it on the table when I changed the lenses over.

Sock, where do you store a viewfinder? I know, I could have bought the case that holds the lens and finder. But, the night I got the lens I was cleaning the too small socks out of Sammy's draw, and choose a nice navy blue one to be the home of my 21 finder. The next one is going into a bright red sock, something that will stand out.

Rover I hope you contact the place you stopped for lunch, to see if they found it. Not many passers-by would have use for a 21mm finder, so I expect if another customer came across it, they'd be likely to turn it in. Maybe it's there waiting for you, lonely!

Hi, Rover -

Sorry to hear about your loss. Since we're neighbors, how about a cruise on the Connecticut River to cheer you up? Boat is powered by an electric motor. Rides gently. Whisper quiet. Bring camera for some photos. Bring family if you care. Contact me at billgem@hotmail.com if you are interested.

Huck

PS - My hunch is that the finder is not lost. Just misplaced. Good luck.

Rover, Doug is right, maybe the finder is there alone waiting for you. Let us know, and good luck !

I will be calling this morning, just in case. My worst fear is that it was placed on the lunch tray, and, gulp, thrown away.

Now about these avatars, I have 4 cats and 2 dogs. I can really confuse you guys if I tried. Besides, Rover is really cute. He is getting a little older now and becoming quite the father figure around my house. He now tends to let the other guys catch the mice and just moves in to claim the prize when all is done.

i'll keep a good thought...

now about those cats!

Rover, the best you can do is call. I'm sure they'll have it by the counter, wondering what it is or what it is used for and who would leave a perfectly useless telescope/microscope piece on a table.

BTW, the red sock idea is great!

One more: I miss Doug's cat! Be happy I'm not using my other avatar (Ben looking upwards at my hand above the camera).

I actually gave the loss some thought and was prepared to move on without the viewfinder if necessary.

The 21mm field of view is pretty darn wide. More or less everything that your eyes see. So, I figured why not just use my eyes.

I messed around and tooled a mount I could hold in my nose that will slide into the hotshoe of the camera. This would anchor my eyes in a consistent place above the camera. Then I hung a bent coat hanger from the bill of a baseball cap, painted white of course, to serve as bright lines. I may have gotten a few strange looks, but, when the need is there, the mother of invention rolls on.

I am glad the viewfinder is on its way home.

This reminds me I have a 21mm finder, but no 21mm lens. I bought this Zeiss finder 30-35 years ago to carry around and peer at the world, to discover how badly I "needed" the matching lens. Of course at that time there was just the expensive Super Angulon to fit my Leica M2, and I never bought one.

I expect this finder was made for use with the Biogon on a Contax II or III. There are threads around the eyepiece, as if there's something missing there, like a piece of trim or an eyecup attachment.

Anyone know about these?

Well, the viewfinder is home and bliss has returned to my household. Thank you for your support during my troubles.

I have got the first batch of photos back too. I am very happy with the results. I have to practice more with this wide of a lens, but it performs just as I assumed it would. I will hopefully get a chance to scan some images in the next few days and I will provide a non technical review of this lens. If you are thinking of getting one, I will give two words of advise, GET IT. A big thumbs up from me.

More will follow.

home sweet home!
i'm looking forward to your thoughts on this lens.

i have to admit that going to a wide angle lens would be last on my list of purchase priorities but i like the look of wide angle shots. i just don't seem to be able to use them that well.

i wonder if anyone here has either of the 28s from cv. i'd like to hear about them (or did we do that already?)

I have the 25 and the 28/3.5, Joe, and they're both excellent, though this 28 is built very very well. I've never had the pleasure of the 28/1.9, but I've been tempted. But it's enough larger than the 28 Summicron, which is so much more expensive, that just thinking about it was frustrating!

Here's a 28/3.5 shot on my CLE, though it's hard to see enough to judge online. And this was a long-expired roll of Kodacolor 1000, so it has a faded grainy look. Not the best test...

I have the CV 21/4 (black finish) and viewfinder as well and it's a peach. I'm considering selling mine though because I'm not a very good wide-angle shooter and I find 21mm too wide for my skills. Or I could be temped to trade up to a 35/1.7 Ultron (in black). My 21/4 includes square shade, leather case and brightline finder.

If anyone's interested, send me a PM.

I find my self very often being very close to my subject, the dad of a 4 year old has to be, the 21 answers a need for me. My perspective is that it sees what I do. Shooting this wide Gene I would say works best when you take a couple steps forward, so much so that you feel you are part of the image.

Thanks for the tip, Rover. I bought this lens to challenge myself with, and it has certainly done its job :) I tend towards telephoto (love the 90-100mm range) so this is WA 'therapy' for me.

I'm sure I just need to keep working at it... It sure is a sweet little lens though, isn't it?

gene, i'm curious as to why you would want the 35/1.7?
that 40 is a nice lens.
is it just the speed difference, would you keep both?

i'd love to make an offer on the 21 (just to have it to play with) but finances are tight, as usual.

Joe, I'm thinking of adding a second body somewhere in the next while and if I do it'll most likely be an CV R2 or R3 (or whatever it gets called). My main lens for it would be 35mm. That's the only WA lens I don't find uncomfortably wide ...

Gene

that makes sense, would you become a 2 bodies at one time kinda shooter then?

LOL! :) Okay, maybe Richard won't see this...

I don't know yet. I might become a 2-body shooter, or I might sell the Leica CL to fund additional lenses. Keeping the options open ...

Gene

08-05-2004, 12:11
Joe, I like the CL a lot, but as my eyes get worse with aging, I prefer modern cams because I find them easier to see through and to use. That's one of the reasons I like my DSLR -- the AF lenses really help me out. I also have fairly large hands and sometimes I find the CL just a wee bit small. But I want to keep one foot in the RF camp simply because I like RF's. It's what I started out with (new Minolta HiMatic 7 many years ago) and I never lose my admiration for them, even though I'm not a street shooter.

Doug

Gene, we do all deteriorate with age -- physically, that is, othewise we're getting better and better! But the wonders of modern technology can address some of that deterioration. Is it possible for your eyesight to be improved?

Without that technology I'd be effectively blind today, and wishing for some way to still enjoy photography. And reading, driving, TV, etc. I now have had cataracts removed from both eyes, three years apart. They even fixed it so that I don't really need glasses to drive, read, use the computer, or use a camera.

I did get that Fuji GA645Wi last year to check how I'd like auto-focus, and auto-everything-else too. Interesting experience, and at the time my left eye wasn't much use... and I'm left-eyed!

Amazing stuff, technology; maybe it could help your eyesight?

GeneW
08-05-2004, 13:54
Doug, I'm truly delighted to hear that your cataract removal was so successful and that you're enjoying photography as much (more?) than ever.

I'm not quite there yet -- I have small incipient cataracts that will have to grow for a few years before they're removed. I'm a trifocal glasses wearer and that's not the best combo for any viewfinder. But I keep at it and keep enjoying it. I find my Sylus Epic, even though it frustrates me at times, is my easiest 'RF' camera to use because of its autofocus. But I'm stubborn and use my manual cameras too. I love the classic feel of them. Gotta admit though that those Canon AF lenses on my DRebel turn out some wonderfully sharp images. With that cam, I use the viewfinder more for composition than anything else.

Two different worlds but in the end both manual cams and AF cams are photography and ya just gotta love all the options!

Gene
