Nikonos

I recently find out that my Dad used to do quite a bit of underwater photography with his Nikonos V, and this has gotten me interested in the Nikonos series. Who here uses one? Does anyone? And do you use it for Diving, or something else?

I have a Nikonos IV, amazingly smooth in operation, I use it for really bad weather, underwater, snowboarding etc.

I use a Nikonos III for a beach/bad weather camera. I just spent a week at the beach with it and it delivers nice results. I have the 35mm lens but want to get another Nikonos with the 80mm lens. Understand that they should be serviced yearly if you take them underwater. Also, only the 35mm and 80mm work both in and out of the water. The other lenses are underwater only. Fun, unique cameras. I have a Nikonos II that serves as a storm camera.

Also works well as a deadly weapon when swung.

First, Nikonos II TriX (grain), and second is from a Canon AS-6 (about 20 years old, $20 on Ebay). Both were used with flash. I have a Toshiba TM-1 for the Nikonos II ($14.00 on Ebay) and the AS-6 has a built-in flash.

As my main interest in photography the past few years has been underwater photography, I can say I have used a Nikonos V underwater When I get home, I can post some film images I took with this camera underwater.

Nowadays, I shoot digital underwater and use a D300 with a Subal housing.

Few underwater shooters use this camera anymore as pretty much everyone shoots digital although there are a very few who use it mainly for the very highly regarded 15mm Nikkor lens. If you want to learn underwater photography, I advise against getting started with a Nikonos. The learning curve with digital makes it so much easier to learn lighting techniques and the other things unique to underwater photography.

The Nikonos was a great camera in its day for underwater photography but nowadays , digital photography has taken over.
