View Full Version : RFF Last Rolls of Kodachrome Project
Let us do a photo project which consists of shooting what we have left in our fridges on Kodachrome. You can share rolls with RFF members who do not own any Kodachrome.
This can also be a project which includes a traveling camera with Kodachrome in it so that all RFF members get a chance to shoot one more time Kodachrome.
In fact, it should be both projects simultaneously (your own camera plus a traveling camera or cameras).
Then, we have people edit scans and put together a RFF Goodbye to Kodachrome Folder for all to see.
Any interest?

I'd be interested in shooting some kodachrome. I've never even shot any kind of slide film :(
I've never shot kodachrome, but I bought 3 rolls just last month, for this purpose. Count me in :)

A traveling camera could be a challenge, given the time frame. It would be a shame for people to take shots and then not get it developed in time because of an unexpected stall somewhere.
Participants List:
1. Raid
2. Mephilico
3. ktran
I am not sure if Brian Legge wants to participate or not.
Just copy the list and add your name and re-post the list.
How about targeting August 15-September 15 as the photo month for this project?
Huh? I don't have any Kodachrome nor any way to get any right now.
On the other hand, I've already sort-or done what you're talking about Raid. I think we both participated in a Pass the RF project (number 4 maybe?) and I shot 2 rolls of Kodachrome through it.
I'll participate however possible. Or if you or someone has a roll they wish to sell for a reasonable price...I'm into that too.
thanks,
barry

Hi Barry,
I will look in the fridge and see what I have left of Kodachrome film.
Let's first see who wants to participate.
Then we can work out details.

I found another 10 rolls of K64 in the freezer... if you are in Sydney... let me know... will be happy to sell a roll or two.
Not interested in the traveling Kodachrome camera, but have set myself the task of shooting a few rolls before the dead-line.

When is the last time for Kodachrome developing at Dwaine's?

12/10/2010 according to the article, but I've previously heard 12/31/2010.

I've got an exposed roll I've been waiting (three years) to develop, but nothing else. I'd be interested in buying just one roll to use for this.
e: Never mind that, I've bought 3 rolls on ebay.

I shot 10 rolls while in Arles, they are on the way to CH/USA for development. I have a 2 or 3 rolls left I'll shoot in august. Not yet decided what to do with my "last" roll. Must be something "special". Family? My town? Beautifull colours of the surrounding during my august holidays? Or just a research for colour, including some attempt for still life like pictures? Difficult decision...
robert
PS I guess that 12/10/2010 means tenth of december, correct?

I've been thinking about it for a while. I overestimated how much of it I could shoot before they stopped processing, and the last thing I want is for it to sit there unexposed and have to junk it. Film is for shooting!

Count me in. Like many, I have been hoarding some. It needs to be shot. I will keep two rolls unshot to prove it ever existed. :D
One reason I haven't shot it, besides laziness and lack of time, is I don't know how to send it off. How do we do that? Can we just send it off, should we look for mailers? Those of you enlightened ones who have been doing this, what do we do? Anyway, I'm in.

Great question above. Has anyone recently been able to send out Kodachrome through a major retailer (Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, etc...)? Their prices tend to be lower than sending to Dwayne's directly.
Dwayne's has a postage of at least $10 maybe even $15 now.

I'm in. I have one roll left of the last batch (expiry 11/2010) which I will take on my summer holiday next week to use in my Leica IIIc in south-west France.
I also may have one roll left now. I better think of an "important event" ... no clue !
If anyone could use a 36 exp. 25 that expired in 1990, just send an SASE padded envelope and I'll drop one in the mail.
It seems OK here (http://matsumura.smugmug.com/Photography/HAF-Kodachrome-25/12275679_6eFTb#875410743_QGXnV) are some shots from a few months ago, shot in a Hexar AF and over exposed 1/3 (probably didn't need it).
Dwaynes messed up on the scanning, these are low res scans, but they promised to re-scan at high res when I send in my next order.
I recall reading (on APUG, they have a huge k'chrome thread) that the Walmart processing is mounted-only - in other words the simplest possible service. That's probably reasonable as the price was also the lowest. As I am sitting here in Holland I cannot verify that of course, and the same APUG thread also mentioned that the Walmart employees had no clue about the need to mark the envelope(s) "SEND OUT ONLY". Check all this before making any important decisions with your last rolls of course.
On a personal note, I was metaphorically kicking myself in Arles, as I managed to leave the bag of Kodachrome at home . . . :(

Dwayne's postage isn't nearly that high. The key to saving on shipping is to send multiple rolls. Return shipping for the first roll is $4.50, and subsequent rolls in the same shipment are fifty cents each. The return shipping on 10 rolls, for example, is $9.00.
Developing costs are $10 per roll of 36, and $8 per roll of 24.

You are correct, Nate.
I could swear that it was $10 minimum a year ago for shipping when asking for developing C-41 film.
This is posted on PN in 2009:
Go to Wal-Mart (present almost everywhere in the USA), go to the photo section, ignore the clerks, grab a film processing envelope. Fill out your name, address, and then in the bottom tick off the "special instructions" box.
Then write in the special instructions box "KODACHROME K-14".
Wait 10-14 days, and pay $6.88 + Tax.
However, via Wal-mart, you will get only mounted slides back. If you want an unmounted strip, then you need to mail to Dwayne's directly
If this works, then you would save quite a lot on shipping cost. Right? Is it worth it? Would you do it?
Dwayne's Photo: http://www.dwaynesphoto.com/newsite2006/customer-service.html
I recommend to request at the same time to have the film scanned, if you send the film directly to Dwayne's Photo. Sending the film from Walmart may result in not being allowed to get slides and prints.

This is the way I used to get my Kodachrome developed. Fairly quick turn around time and MUCH cheaper (no shipping costs). Biggest annoyance is the confusion of the Walmart employees when you come to pick up the film.

i have never sent kodachrome directly to dwaynes. i only go through walmart. i send out around 10 rolls at a time and they always come back in about 10-12 days. its 5.88 for 24 Exp. and 6.88 for 36 exp. i picked up 7 rolls today and thats what i paid. i have sent out atleast 40 rolls through walmart and never had a problem.
some how they do end up a little dusty, not bad though. a little canned air and problem solved. i don't know if thats the same as when you send them directly through dwaynes.

Don't they still use cardboard like mounts? Dust is probably from that.

they are cardboard mounts. i never really thought of that.
Hi - late to this thread.
I'm shooting 10 before the deadline, but if any member has a lot extra, I'd pay a reasonable price (before the discontinued increase). It makes no sense that any would go unused just because people are holding out for $20 a roll.

I've got one roll of exposed 20+ year old Kodachrome 25 in the freezer waiting to go to Dwayne's, one more roll of unexposed Kodachrome 25 and one of Kodachrome 64 left to shoot (both in the freezer). I'm living in Brussels, Belgium and am confident I can find worthy subject for my final rolls. I'll participate too.

I've been trying to sell my G1 kit, but decided, what the heck, might as well use my last roll of K25 in the G1. Everything sold but the G1 and 28/2.8. So, G1 and 28/2.8 and K25 :)
Here is a run down on my four rolls of K25
Roll one: Shot this summer in Browning MT at a parade during NAID in a Nikon F100 and 28-105.
Roll two: In the F100 and has a few clicks to go.
Roll three: In the M6 ( Nikkor lenses to be used only :D )
Roll four: In the G1 with 28/2.8.
Should be fun!

Maybe whatever comes from my 1954 roll could be my unique contribution. I'm not expecting great color fidelity, though. A little while ago a friend and I found an undeveloped roll of Kodachrome Super-8 film in an old camera in his attic. With a process-by date in the mid-60's, we're guessing it was taken by his late uncle on a business trip; a Panamanian friend confirmed the images were of the Panama Canal. Good old Dwayne's did their best with it. Here is a frame as digitized by them and my best effort at "enhancement" of what image was left.
May I join? I was given my first and one and only roll of Kodachrome which I still have to use!

Of course you can, Sara.
Just add your name to the list.

Hi Michael,
Any photos and with any camera would be welcomed here.
Don't forget to take photos with your Kodachrome rolls.
This was a reminder also to myself.

I have four or five shots left on my roll. I reckon I will need that processing fellow's address in a day or two ...
This gives me hope that I'll get something out of my expired-1954 roll!
If the roll is that old then it would probably have been process K-11 and most likely can't be processed in the current K-14, which has been in use since the mid 1970's. Better check with Dwaynes before shooting the roll. Good luck.

Paul,
It is either Dwayne's Photo or Walmart, with the intend to reach Dwayne's Photo.
I shot my rolls of K-64 in Arles but...I lost one! :bang:
Oh bad luck Robert. That would be a bit depressing I think. I'm still trying to find time to contact-print and scan the film I shot in Arles, but I think they are all accounted for at least.
I'm just back from a week in the southern Sierra Nevada, and shot five rolls of Kodachrome. They're off to Dwayne's on Monday!
I need to complete my rolls too, Steve.

Can we get a "Kodachrome Gallery" listed in the gallery section?
Brad,
Yes, we should, but not sure if we can.
Maybe we can just do it here instead.

I finished my last five rolls of Kodachrome 25 only a few months ago.
I am going to look for the slides to see if they are acceptable.
However I never posted any pictures here, but will try
Thanks

I'd wondered about that, Martin, and now that I reread the Wikipedia entry on Kodachrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodachrome), I see that it's not one but two generations out of date. (Or three, if there was ever a K-13 process...) I'd even thought to call Kodak to see what they'd say. After all, it says on the box to return it to Kodak for the prepaid processing and stereo slide mounting ;)
I've forgotten the exact date on the box of movie film about which I posted above, but it might have been K-12, and Dwayne's was willing to run it through anyway, but the results were not encouraging.

Recently shot two rolls using a Mju. One roll left which I`ll load into an M2 so count me in.
The rolls were given to me by Noel (Xmas) .
They all have red tops with a Kodak logo on the outside of the plastic container.
Despite using 25 /64 /200 since `73 I can`t remember seeing this before.
bump .........
I have used 2 of my 3 rolls.
The last roll will be used very soon.
Then, they are off to Dwayne's photo.
Are you using your Kodachromes?

I had one roll, shot it in China, sent it to Dwayne's a couple days ago.
Haven't loaded my last roll yet. Still debating....Some of those projects & contest photos are several years old now. I wonder if anyone looks at them anymore! But your right Raid, they might get more views by posting right here.

I've got some from about a year ago, in China...will finish my 3 or 4 rolls soon when I go abroad again.
Where can we post them?
Post them here. It would be a good thread.
Exposed a roll yesterday. Exposed most of a roll today. I'll finish it tomorrow. Probably start a 3rd roll. I'm on a roll. Yarrrrrrrrrr!

Count me in as well! I've got 2 rolls from a member here the other time but I haven't used it yet. Like Morca007, I'm so afraid of wasting it I haven't shot it.

Just finished my penultimate roll: Bessa R with Jupiter 8 and CV 35. Now have the big decision of what to use for the last one:
Canon Eos 3?
Yashica Electro 35?
Canon GIII QL17?
Olympus 35RC?
Olympus Trip?
Olympus XA?
Canon AE-1?
Canon AE-1 Program?
Canon TX
Decisions, decisions......

I shot a roll last week , just sent it to Dwaynes. I'm saving my last roll for the autumn colour !
Count me in please.
I've got abt 10 rolls now and autumn colors for it
For me it will be the first and the last experience with Kodachrome...
Two rolls (135-36 Kodachrome 64) on their way to Dwayne's as I type. If these two test rolls fly, I'll burn up the other 12-15 rolls as quickly as I can. My remaining stock is mostly K-64. I have 2 rolls of K-25 & 1 roll of K-200. The first photo I ever took was on Kodachrome II in my dad's Konica I. I have the camera now. It would only be right to shoot my last roll of Kodachrome in that camera. This will be fun.
This is cool, Wayne. I have a Konica I, so if you want me to help you burn Kodachrome film, just let me know! [not really]

For info, from Dwaynes' Website:
Kodachrome — The End of an Era
Kodachrome Film Status: The last day of processing for all types of Kodachrome film will be December 30th, 2010. The last day Kodak will accept prepaid Kodachrome film in Europe is November 30th, 2010. Film that is not in our lab by noon on December 30th will not be processed.
Best regards,
RoyM
Thanks for the reminder. I'll send mine the Monday after Christmas (or sooner) just to make sure I beat the deadline.

Raid,
Let me see how the test rolls look first. The film is old. I have trips planned for this month & October. After that, I'll take inventory. Hopefully I will have some Kodachrome for your Konica I.
Thanks, Wayne, but it really is not needed unless you want to.

I really hate Dwayne's processing. They always cut the last frame of my roll in half, they recently destroyed an entire roll of film.

I can understand being a bit self-conscious about it being the Last Roll, but hey -- at least you didn't have to overcome Steve McCurry's case of nerves! Talk about performance anxiety....

Indeed. But you will be there for Youxin's Leica exhibition at the Beijing World Art Museum, it sounds like. You should go see it; I'm put out that I missed it by a month...

I'll look it up online, but do you have a link?
I'm only there a week or less...Oct 14 - 20. And of course, there's the Wukesong camera mall!
This is excellent material.
By the way, what do you recommend to those members here who do not have access to a slide scanner?
Very nice shots Harry. You also have a lovely family. The color rendered very well. I've yet to load my last roll. Waiting for the fall colors to arrive!

I had really good luck using a Canon 1D Mk4 with an L-series 100mm macro lens -- taping the slides to a window and using that light to shoot 1:1.
Low-brow, I know. But it rendered the unique K64 colour perfectly, and was very sharp too.

Well, I would see if a local camera store will do a CD for you. My local, The Camera Company, in Norwood, MA, does scanning of prints, slides, and negatives, and will get you a CD for about $15 or so. Their scanning quality is pretty decent, too, although they only do jpegs, no 16-bit TIFFs. The lack of higher color formats is what made me invest in an Epson v700.
And, thanks for the compliments!

There's the thread about submissions for the show, but it's too late for that now, obviously. But there are some links in the announcement for more info.

You can have Dwaynes scan them when they process your film.

All rolls of Kodachrome are now spoken for.
Dwayne's charges$10/per 36 exp roll for developing, plus $4.99 for scanning.
If you mail the roll to Dwayne's via Walmart, they usually do not allow special order (scanning).

Hi,
Strangely, I just noticed this thread today, just a couple of hours after I posted off my last to rolls of Kodachrome 64 to Dwayne's. I'd like to add my name to it if that's OK.

I should be shooting my roll this weekend. It involves a vintage Porsche and my model dressed up Mad Men style. I'm excited to see how it turns out...
I have 2 rolls in the fridge that I haven't found a good enough reason to expose and like phil wright I too just noticed this thread. Maybe this is a good one. So I'll add myself as well if that's cool...

Glad to assist, Raid! I hope you get some good shots, and I hope that the film isn't too old for decent color. :)
I am in the midst of a "little problem" here; one of my camera seems to have pinholes in the shutter curtain. I don't know which it is, and this could be costly since I took several rolls of Kodachrome and I don't know which roll will have damage in it and I don't know which camera has this problem!

Dwayne's usually has the film processed the day after they've received it.
Generally takes a week and a half from the time I drop it in the mail to the time I receive the processed film. You're a bit closer to Kansas than I, so it may be a little shorter.
I will work on the KM25 film this weekend ... that it, I will take photos.

P.S.: A friend just offered me two rolls, so I'm in. I'm off to the colorful streets of Oakland and San-Fran-Cisco.
Pinholes in curtain = ART :-)
I found the small slit in the metal shutter curtain of a Canon P. I will any moment drive to a hardware store to get some liquid black tape.
I chose the cheapest shipping option. However, they forgot the high res scans, when I called they said to just send a note and the slides back with my next order, and they would re-scan at high res.
I paid for the Kodak packaging, but that isn't anything but the Kodak logo, so will just go with regular processing + high res scanning, for next few rolls.

Got another roll of K25 off to Dwaynes yesterday. Is anyone else paying for high res scanning and getting large file sizes?
With my order earlier this year, I called and specifically ordered the high res scan option:
http://www.dwaynesphoto.com/newsite2006/color-neg-processprint.html
which mentions 4.5Mb file sizes for each frame. What I got back were scans in the 1Mb to 1.5Mb size.
I called, and they said to send the slides back, or with my next roll and they would rescan at higher rates.
This morning I called to let them know the old slides were on their way from the old order, along with a new roll. At first the rep said there was only one type of scan. Then I mentioned the web page and the previous discussion, and she said 6Mb files.
Anyways, just curious what file sizes others are getting back from their scans, if they are paying for the high-res scanning option.

They mean that they are generally 6MB uncompressed. If you open them in photoshop it will show you the size. I'd never get anything done by Dwayne's if I don't have to. They are the worst developer I've ever used.
there's some confusion. the lady on the phone after my first roll was pretty sure the file size per image was supposed to be in the 4Mb range, per image, as viewed on the cd-rom.
And again today, even 6Mb today, but only after prompting and mentioning the web site service in the link on their site above.
If they come back with small scans. I'm just going to develop and scan my Kodachrome myself. Yes, in K-Caffenol ;)

From the Uk it`s about a two week turnaround :)
When I send stuff to Ilford ,which is about seventy miles away ,it`s about three weeks !
I have my last roll of K64 sat in my M3 .
I took the risk, and I mailed off 4 rolls via Walmart.
"
Process K14 Kodachrome ... if possible, include Photo CD"
What's the advantage of going to Walmart vs Dwaynes? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

There is no shipping cost, and the charge per roll is much less even though the film goes to Dwayne's. I have never done this before.

Dwayne's charges $10/roll for developing and $2.99 for scans. Then you add shipping.

Raid, since I am by nature cheap, I thought I might try the Walmart thing when you made your post.
But after thinking a bit, I remembered the one and only time I used Walmart for c-41, everything was fouled up. So, I think I will just mail straight to Dayne's ... :)
"Well now ..." means a thoughtful. supportive reaction, at least for me. :)
Hi Paul,
I gave it also some thought, but this approach is widely used, as documented on photo.net and on smilar photo sites.
Walmart does not touch the film.
OK, I got it now, let me know how your stuff comes out. What I don't understand is how you would request the high res scans that are on Dwayne's website, but not on their order form?
But since I haven't gotten any high res scans back from them yet anyways, perhaps they outsourced their website to Walmart and the high-res scans are all BS anyways.
Anyways, I hope you get some good images. I have a slide scanner, if Dwayne's doesn't deliver on the high res scans, but what I might do is wait until all of my rolls are done, then send them off to scancafe or somewhere to do a bulk high res batch scan.

Hi Ted,
I have debated the question of not getting high resolution scans from Dwayne's in the past, and they insisted that the scane were high resolution.
The mailer at Walmart has a box for special processing. I typed up slips of paper with "Process K 14 Kodachrome and scans" and I placed them in each envelope on top of writing the same request on the envelope.
The file size of the images mentioned on their website is 4Mb per image file. This is the size I get from Costco C41, but not what I got from my first K25 order with Dwaynes, but on the phone after receiving the small files (1.5Mb) they acknowledged it was their mistake, and they tossed in a "generic" photo CD instead.
Were your scans this size, or smaller, or larger?
Thanks!

I've not been impressed with Dwayne's scans. Has anyone asked them to leave the film uncut, and sent the strip to NCPS for scanning?
I stopped ordering scans from Dwaynes, and do the scans myself. I'm scanning my last Kodachrome slides as I write this.

Paul: You are 100% correct in your wise suggestion. Will do!
OK, if the were 4MB JPGs on the CD-ROM you got back from Dwaynes, that is great, that is what they say on the website, and say when calling customer service (after some prodding).
What I got with my first KM25 roll was 1.5MB mini scans, they were good for proofing, but not anything I'd want to make an 8x10 with.
Thanks Raid.
